Brain Break

Title: Balancing Pencils

Materials: a pencil
Approximate time: 1-3 minutes
Grade level: all grades
Each student needs to stand up and balance a pencil on across their pointer
finger. When the pencil falls off the finger, the student sits down. This can be
increasingly difficult as the students could:
 March in place
 Walk around the room
 Pretend they are jumping rope
In the end, if there are a few VERY good balancers, the teacher can determine
when the balancing should stop and get the class back together.

Title: Technology Break
Materials: Cell phone/IPad/Tablet
Approximate time: 1 minute
Grade level: High School

The students are given a minute break to check the “important” information that
they feel the need to do all day long. This break is meant to deter them from
continually looking at the phone/technology during class time.
