This is a letter of support for the inaugural 12 South Neighborhood parklet proposed by the 12 South Flats, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Smith Gee Architecture Studio, and Nashville Civic Design Center. 12 South has become one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Nashville due to the vibrance of local restaurants and retail, and strong neighborhood zoning/design. This parklet will continue to activate the neighborhood, as well as add a pedestrian-focused community amenity, as a welcoming monument for 12 South. We believe this project will (1) encourage an even more walkable neighborhood through additional distance between sidewalks and the street; (2) replace a concrete parking space with a welcoming gathering area for the community; (3) add green space to the north end of the strip, mirroring Sevier Park on the south side; and (4) foster further economic development for neighboring businesses. The project will incorporate sustainable, thoughtful design and feature seating, art installations, and landscaping within a double-length parking bay enclosed by two curb extensions. The adjacent property owner, 12 South Flats, has agreed to maintain the lot as part of their commitment to the neighborhood.
