TITLE: Health and Disease

AIM: To investigate the effects of exercise on breathing rate, pulse rate and heart rate

APPARATUS/MATERIALS:

• Digital sphygmomanometer
• Stopwatch
• Student

METHOD:

1. Work in groups of at least 4 students.

2. One student should sit quietly for 2 minutes.

3. After the 2 minutes measure the student’s blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate.
(Measuring the parameters should not take longer than two minutes). Record the results
in a suitable table.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 until two more sets of readings have been taken.

5. Determine the average of each and record in the table.

6. The student should do sustained vigorous exercise for 4 minutes.

7. Immediately after the exercise record the blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate of
the student.

8. Record the blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate of the student at 2 minute
intervals until the readings are at or below the resting values.

DISCUSSION:

● Background information on blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate: definitions,
average values, factors which affect them.
● Posit possible explanations for increase in:
➢ Blood pressure
➢ Pulse rate
➢ Breathing rate
