On 23rd February 2019, a carnival of Scouts’ Day Out was held in SMK Sungai

Layar, Kedah in conjunction with founder birthday. This carnival was the biggest
carnival that was ever held. The scouts from Institute of Teacher Education in Penang
were participating in the carnival as Scouts go Solar (SgS) Officers. The booth name
is Solar Booth. At the booth, there are three sections, Section A, B and C.

Section A is divided into 2 station which is station A1 and A2. In station A1, the
aim of the station is to give the emphasis on the knowledge about solar energy that
can be use in our daily basis. In this station, there will be 5 Scouts go Solar officer who
will take turns in giving a briefing to a group with at least 10 participants each. It is
conducted this way to avoid congestion during the queue and ensure the
understanding of the participants. The officer will use cards of information about
Scouts go Solar that is hang to help the participants understand easier and better
during the presentation. As a suggestion of improvement, the information card should
have more example of the uses of solar energy that can apply to our daily life. By doing
this way, the participant can expand their knowledge and not only limited to theory.

For station A2, the carried out is the Devil’s Ray that requires participants to use
mirrors to reflect the sunlight to the Dart Board. There will be thermometer stick to the
dart board and the participant have to use the sunlight’s reflection to increase the
temperature in 5 minutes. Participants will compete against other groups to see which
group can raise the highest temperature. As a suggestion for improvement, we should
have at least 3 dart board so that all of the participants are given the chance to do the
activity as there are more than 1000 participants on that day thus giving difficulties to
the Scouts go Solar officer to conduct the activities.

Section B also divided into two station, station B1 and B2. Our activity at station
B1 is solar clock. This solar clock is a very important science to use for scouts who
are camping in the forests to know the times. At this exhibition, we explain how to use
this solar clock with an important part of the show to show north, south, east and west
to get the right time reading.

The exhibition is celebrated from the beginning to the end of the exhibition. The
exhibition was filmed as many scouts were present at the exhibition. Scouts are given
the opportunity to try their own to try to find time using the solar clock. However, solar
clock construction activities can not be implemented due to lack of time and workforce.
But every participant are delighted and understood the used of solar clock.

At station B2, we had an activity which is Solar Insect Race. In this activity, we
use 5 solar insect toys. The shape of the insect toys are like grasshoppers. The solar
insects toys will move when sunlight reacted on the solar panel. The students need to
put the solar insect for race on the lane that have given. When the race started, they
need to reflect the sunlight rays using a mirror to the solar insect toys for the toys to
move aggressively.

Our activity were held from morning until evening which is from 9 am until 2 pm.
There were many scouts member joined this activity. They enjoyed playing with the
solar insect race game. The weather from the morning until the evening was absolutely
perfect to perform the activity. There was no rain or cloudy weather. From this activity,
the students can conclude that there are many uses of sunlight as it is a renewable
energy in daily life.

Meanwhile, section C is also divided by two stations which is station C1 and

C2. Station C1 is all about solar cooking and color bottles temperature. During the
program, participants had an opportunity to try the dishes that was make, pudding
bread, corn porridge and Maggi. During the briefing session, they listened carefully.
Their passion for learning from elementary school is very much we admire and this
attitude should be emulated by all scouts.

In addition, for color bottle activity, they are fascinated with which bottles have
the highest temperature. The reasons given are also very good. In fact, they can also
relate to their daily lives. We also gain great experiences in terms of helping people
with disabilities to learn about Scout Go Solar by using sign language.

colour bottles.

Station C2 is one of the stations that can attract most of the participants. This
station is named as Solar Art. This is because, in this station participants can learn
how to do arts using solar energy. This station is conducted by four Scouts go Solar
officers. Two of the officers will brief the participants how solar energy can be used to
make arts such as write their name on the ice cream sticks. We also provided some
of solar arts samples so that the participants can see more clearly about the thing that
they are going to learn in this station.

solar arts on the chair.

There are two more Scouts go Solar officers that will show the participants how
to do solar arts. There are three important material that must have in order to do solar
arts that is magnifying glass, sunglasses and the sun. Without these materials, solar
arts will not happen. After the briefing session, all of the participants can do solar arts
on their own with guidance from Scouts go Solar officers. We found that most of the
participants are glad to do their names on the ice cream sticks that will be given to
every participant that have visit the station. This is because they can bring those sticks
with them as a souvenir after they do solar arts activity.

The program continued until 4.00 p.m. There are some weakness that we need
to improve if we want to make sure the participants gain the maximum input about
solar activities.
