Lesson Idea Name: Not My Fault

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S6E5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to show how Earth’s
surface is formed
f. Construct an explanation of how the movement of lithospheric plates, called plate tectonics, can cause
major geologic events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2b Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social
interactions online or when using networked devices.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This product allows students to participate that may not otherwise participate and demonstrate
their knowledge.
Representation: The quiz can be taken on the computer but it can also be taken on paper if students have
difficulty with computers.
Action and Expression: There are different types of questions on the quiz. Ones that require only recognition
of content and then a couple that require demonstration of understanding.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Students were introduced to fault lines by discussing the San Andreas Fault to see what students knew about
fault lines. The teacher then explained tectonic plates and their motion. Then discussed normal faults, thrust
faults and transform faults. Students then modeled fault lines using candy bars. After students complete their
activity we will take this quiz to reinforce content knowledge and understanding.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Students will use tablets to complete this quiz.
We will review any question students struggle with.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The purpose of this quiz activity is to make sure students understand the content. Therefore data obtained
will be used to correct misconceptions of the material.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? Students will be given their score and the class average.
This data will be used to guide planning and instruction the following day.

How will the data be used? The data collected during this SRT activity will be used as an informal formative
assessment to inform the teacher what concepts have been mastered and what concepts need additional
time.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I had not developed a quiz before and wanted to make
sure it had a variety of response types. Giving short answer questions allows me to see what students really
know.

Reflective Practice: This activity will help the teacher know what students understood and did not
understand about what was taught today. Students will receive immediate feedback as will the teacher. This
will help inform about what needs to be covered the next class period to reinforce concepts and when
students are ready to move ahead. If students understood the concepts presented this lesson could be
followed with an activity to deepen their understanding of the topic.
