Topic in full sentence (identifies the problem): Homelessness in Riverside especially Downtown is a huge issue so we
hope to bring awareness to the problem and get the community more involved in helping them.
Description of practicum (What do you see this journey being for you?)
We see this journey as being a eye opener for us and the community. Everyone looks at the homeless in a certain way
and we hope to make others more selfless or even more helpful to the less fortunate.
What information did you learn through your research that you will apply to the practicum? Provide specific details. TO
BE COMPLETED AFTER RESEARCH!
I learned that 45% of the homeless are mentally ill. I also learned that sleep deprivation leds to drug and
alcohol usage or add onto existing drug and alcohol usage.
Learning Goals/Outcomes: What will you understand and/or be able to do as a result of your practicum?
We will have a better understanding of the homeless and be able to help others with getting a different persepective of
the homeless. Hopefully poly will begin having an annual clothing drive like we have an annual canned food drive.
How will you make a difference in other people’s lives from your journey. What impact do you hope to have?
The difference we hope to make in other people lives from our capstone is to give those who frown upon the homeless a
different perspective. We hope to use the organization we work with to encourage the homeless. We also hope to get an
annual clothing drive for poly so that even when we are gone we have made a huge impact.
List the steps you will take to complete the practicum and how will you document each and every step for completing
your product (emails, photos, videos, interviews- recorded or transcribed, surveys, phone call logs, etc...). You may add
steps/spaces as needed. A few steps will not do. Think of every possible step.
Step Evidence
Asking teachers to put clothes donation boxes in their classes Pictures/ Videos
After boxes get filled begin to donate them to the salvation army Pictures
Pass out water bottles downtown to the homeless ( around mission inn) Video Footage
Ask Dr. Roe about doing an annual clothing drive Agreement letter
Survey students at poly on volunteer work/ or any way they helped the homeless Pictures for the results of the
survey
Hang posters around Poly to try and get students more involved Pictures/Posters will be seen
Get teachers to play the video in their fourth or fifth period class Video of classes
What organization (if any) will you work with and for what purpose?
We plan on working with Feeding America, United way, The Salvation army, and possibly Goodwill. We hope to be
more involved in the community and help the less fortunate. Also to get others involved because if this was to continue
or even more people get involved it would be beneficial to the community.
Learning Stretch: How will this project be a new and meaningful challenge for you?
We have done volunteer work before but it wasn’t repetitive so we hope to gain knowledge and be able to show
compassion for others after trying to put ourselves in their shoes. I think this will be a meaningful challenge because we
are really putting ourselves out there to get more involved.
How will you display your final practicum in your digital portfolio? (Pictures, videos, screencasts, etc…) Remember that
ALL of your evidence must be on your portfolio. An interview must be filmed or have a transcript. Every picture must
have a verbal explanation (screencastify?) Anyone should be able to access your website and be able to understand every
step you took. You saying you did something is not enough. You must have evidence of every step. Be thorough
here!
We will have a digital portfolio with pictures of everything we are doing/ have done. We hope to get a lot of pictures
rather than videos because we are unsure if others would want to be videotaped. If we can’t get pictures or videos we
plan on doing interviews and recording with our phones and uploading that onto the website.
