Introduction
MAJOR CONSERVATION WORK TAKEN UP DURING LAST THREE YEARS
There are 93 +1 centrally protected monuments / sites under the jurisdiction of Nagpur Circle and these monuments are periodically
inspected by sub circle in-charge and senior officers and inspection notes are drawn regarding conservation measures to be taken up. Before
conservation / preservation measures are initiated an extensive study of the monument is done as to its period, the contemporary
technology and the materials used for construction. Even the craftsman who are still pursuing such vocations are employed so that they can
easily understand the intricacies of the work involved and take up the work with considerable dedication and right manner
The major structural conservation works carried out by the Nagpur Circle as follows
• Patur Caves (Two caves) at Patur District- Akola
• Narnala Fort at Narnala, District- Akola
• Lal Khan tomb at Amner, District Amravatai
• Gawilgarh Fort (the walls and the whole area contained by them) at Chikaldara District Amravati
• City wall of Nawab Ismail Khan at Ellichpur (Achalpur), District Amravati
• Hauz Katora at Ellichpur (Achalpur), District Amravati
• All the remains of the circumambulation wall of Pauni Fort at Pauni, District Bhandara
• Mounds known as Hardulala –ki-Tekri at Pauni, District Bhandara

Narnala Fort The cracks in the rood of the Ambar-Mahal and cupolas of the
Akola Narnala 57-58 Chhoti Masjid were grounted with cemented mortar. The extant
tops of the Ambar Mahal and Maha-Kali gateway were made
watertight. Vegetations was removed from the fort walls and the
pathways leading to the monuments were reconditioned by the
spreading of murum and filling of ruts and pits.

Rank of vegetation was removed from over an extensive area from


the exposed faces of fort wall. The path inside the fort were

Minor repairs were carried out.

The Central Museum, Nagpur conducted trial digging at Nagara


and exposed a structure which could be identified as stupa.

Gaimukh Temple No. 1: The missing floor was restored and


the roof treated with cement plaster.

Sita-Nahan Temple: The temple was exposed to view by removing


1973-74 debris. The area was enclosed with a dry rubble compound wall.
Buldhana Lonar A Group of fifteen Temples Repairs to the roof and floors have also been undertaken.
Square Kund: The kund was desilted, cleaned and enclosed by a
barbed-wire fencing.

Chhatra: The debris from in and around the monument was


removed to bring to light the original features.

wasprovided wherever required . Removal and resetting of the
undulated and damaged stone flooring and steps around the group
of temples at Lonar were executed.

The eastern gate, bastions and walls of the monument were

by filling up the cavities, gaps in wall and underpinning ,
reconstruction of the fallen portion with available stones was taken

and provided with plain cement concrete as per the adjacent one.

and watertightened using fresh lime concrete finished with lime

Accretions of dust and dirt and the grwothe of moss and lichen
were removed from the surface of the monolithic imaes lying

The Lalpeth Monoliths are lying in the open field and are exposed
to all the vagaries of weather. These sculptures were found to be
covered with thick deposts of moss and lichen all over along with
the layer of dust, dirt etc. Some of these Sculptures have
developed minor cracks due to chande of temperature of

atmospheric conditions. Loose sculptures were consolidated and

cracks filled up with epoxy resin with filler of same materials.

Sculptures were cleaned with ammonial and teepol mixture. A-3
persent zinc silicofluoride solutions is used for fugicidal treatment
and 3 percent polyyinyl state solution as a preservative

2001-2002

The work initiate last year were documented by photographs . The


newly-exposed paintings were taken up for general cleaning and
Chandrapur Chandrapur Temple of Mahakali 59-60 consolidation.

The old yellowish preservtion and accretions of grease, smoke and


dust were eliminated from the painted surface in the temple with
Chandrapur Chandrapur Temple of Mahakali 61-62
the use of organic solvents and reagents. The surface was
thereafter preserved with t transparent resin-solution.

Repair to the Sikhara of the temple including applying suitable

missing, is in progress. Paintings in colour snoweem to the outer

Loose sculptures were collected and documented. The fallen


compound wall was reconstructed.

Watertightening of the roof of the temple by removing dedd plaster,


raking out the joints, filing in the cavities and replastering the same

of various sub-shrines by laying lain cement concrete was

The out of plumb Prakara wall near the main entrance was

deplastered. The exposed portions were pointed . The entrace of
all the sub-shrines were provided with wooden doors. Iron grills
were provided to Dasavatara temple for the safety of the loose

mandapa of the Markandadeva temple was properly covered with
RCC slab with a provision of eight windows

temples at Markanda

The fallen architectural members to the southern side of the


entrance of the main shrine were refixed to their original place and

Two breaches in the city wall of Chandrapur were reconstructed
