Harness, Jill. “11 Artists Doing Amazing Things With Recycled Materials.”
mentalfloss.com/article/13046/11-artists-doing-amazing-things-recycled-materials
In this article, Harness exemplifies eleven different artists who created art pieces out of
common garbage items as an attempt to combat other problems within their own communities.
Harness explains the inspiration behind every artist’s piece, making it a point to say where the
trash came from and gives a background on the artist to form a path to why the artist is now
creating art from garbage. The author provides images of the artist’s work and explanations on
why the artists decided to create their piece using garbage. Harness displays the creation of art
from worthless objects by the eleven artists in an effort to promote awareness of social issues
within their communities. This article provides insight into different types of art that can be
created using garbage and recyclables from my community. In addition, it provided the idea of
bringing awareness not only to the littering and garbage problem but to other social problems
like gun violence, through the art pieces. I will use this information as a base on how I will

This article by Darryl Fears, reveals the massive amount of plastic that is currently
present on Earth. Fears talks about the abundance of plastic that is currently not in use but is just
creating environmental and ecological problems. The author supports his argument by referring
to studies done by The American Association for the Advancement of Science and other
scientists. He also refers to data of the top plastic producers in the world when comparing
advancements by the US, China, and Europe. The article explains that there is an enormous
amount of plastic that is just messing up the environment. It mentions that the only way to get rid
of these plastics is to incinerate them. However, most countries aren’t focusing on destroying the
plastics because of the pollution they release when burned and instead send them to a dump.
Furthermore, the article states that the plastics end up everywhere and have even been found in
the stomachs of dead whales. This source provides a background to the problem created by the
plastics we throw away. It will be used to build a background on the problem that my project is
trying to alleviate.

In this article, Vasily Klyukin explains the main issues with plastic in our environment,
talks about how to use less plastic as a consumer and highlights his own art made from garbage
from all around the world. The author mentions problems such as the five giant islands of
garbage floating in the ocean and how animals mistake the plastics for food. Kylukin also
mentions a study done by Allen Carr, where the use of plastic is compared to smoking because of
its everlasting effect on the environment. The article presents the problem of pollution due to the
overuse of plastics and the terrible systems in place for the plastics afterlife. The author then
provides some tips that could help lessen the problems with pollution. Vasily Klyukin’s art is
used to send a message about the extensive plastic problem on Earth and call to action for the
rest of the world. This article will help me with creating the message that I want my own art to
portray to the group of people it will effect. It will provide more points on why garbage and

washes up ashore to spread the message that Earth needs help. Harlan includes images of the art
that Duran creates and his explanation to why he creates these pieces of art. The article explains
that art is created to bring awareness to the problem with garbage around the world. It’s
supposed to spark a trigger in the observer's brain that we are causing this problem. The author
also mentions that Duran has found garbage from multiple continents on this shore, adding to the
effect that our garbage not only messes without community but affects the rest of the world. This
source gives me examples of a different type of art to create with the trash in my community. It

The article by Sohini Lahiri reflects the story of a man who has devoted thirty years of
his life to creating art from trash and contributing to green projects. Lahiri interviewed Joe
Brown, known as Hong Kong Willie, about his art and how his passion for art lead him to create
this type of art. Brown makes art out of anything including driftwood and old helicopters and
then sells it to finance other green projects. The author provides information about Brown’s life
and the path that lead him to his current occupation as a full-time artist. He also describes the
mindblowing effect of seeing all the art within Brown’s art store. The article details the
encounter between Lahiri and Brown, proving a quick background into Brown’s world of
recycled art. This article provided me with information about how I want people to feel when
they see my art. I want the art to intrigue the observer, making them take look at the piece for a
