CHAPTER 1

Introduction

I. Background of the study

Current Situation

School is a place where an individual exerts his/her own abilities, skills,

and talents, and different experience in life and friends. In the start of a new

school year, there will be new sets of lessons, homework, projects, and many

more school activities. If students do not want to limit themselves in classroom

activities only, there are clubs and organizations that they can join based on their

interest. Being part of one, may help improve their skill that can be used in a real

working environment, as well as their own individuality. It will also give them a

chance to meet and get along with other people. Another thing is, organization

involvement can open doors to bigger and greater experiences. Also, it can truly

be a life changing experience. But the question is, will it be a positive change? Or

a negative change? Some of the things a member can do is choose to join an

activity or choose to be one of the people who plan a specific activity. Through

this, one can gain emotional intelligence through communicating with various

individuals and within groups, developing skills and new relationships that will

take us far in life and are essential for success. However, being a member of an

organization may affect their academic performance, more specifically, their

study time. It may be an advantage or a disadvantage. When joining an

organization, one will be able to acquire more knowledge, skills and talents, and

get a chance to develop and improve those acquired skills and talents. On the
downside, organizations may become demanding, and require students to

devote most of their time in attending meetings, practices and other activities,

especially to those who lack time management.

Rationale

The purpose of this study is to know the impact of joining an organization to

the studies of the grade-11 SHS students. Specifically, to know whether it is an

advantage or a disadvantage to the studies of the students.

II. Statement of the Problem:

This study will be conducted to know the impact of joining an

organization towards the studies of SHS students. Specifically, it seeks to answer

the following questions:

• What are the reasons why students join an organization?

• In what way does joining an organization equip students with more

knowledge and skills that may be helpful to their studies?

• How do students engage their time in organization participation while

focusing in their studies?

• In what way does joining an organization become an

advantage/disadvantage to SHS students’ studies?

III. Significance of the Study

This study aims to know the perception of student-organization members

on the impact of joining an organization towards the studies of students. This

study will benefit people; especially students who plan on joining an organization

in the future, for this will give them insights, and can be a basis on whether they

should or should not join an organization, or what should they possibly do if ever

they would want to join one.

IV. Scope and Limitations

The research focuses only on the impact of joining an organization towards

the studies of students and the perception of student-organization members

about the topic. This study is only limited to the grade-11 senior high school

students of Silliman University school year 2018-2019.

V. Definition of Terms

 Organization- also called as organisation, is an entity comprising multiple

people, such as an institution or an association, which has a collective

goal and is linked to an external environment. The word is derived from

the Greek word organon, which means "organ".

 Student- is a person who is learning something. Students can be children,

teenagers, or adults who are going to school, but it may also be other

people who are learning, such as in college or university.

 Study/ies- the devotion of time and attention to acquiring knowledge on

an academic subject, especially by means of books.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The student years are not only about books and seminars. This wonderful

period of time will facilitate your transition to adult life. Students learn how to live

by themselves or with roommates, conciliate study time with housekeeping and

networking with professors and colleagues. Moreover, if they choose to, they can

enter into contact with their first complex association, namely a student

organization on campus. However, choosing one of the many groups to be with

for up to many years is an important decision. (Amanda Wilks, October 18, 2016,

Pros and Cons: Being in a Student Organization on Campus. Accessed on

August 4,2018. https://www.collegeraptor.com/ find-colleges/articles/

student-life/pros-cons-student-organization-campus/)

On-campus organizations allow students to “take on responsibilities or

challenges to lead and make a difference in the university community” and

“provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be a good leader”—

qualities they can take with them into life after college. Furthermore, in a survey

conducted by the University of Arizona, more than half the students surveyed

agreed that joining student organizations allowed them to strengthen their

leadership skills. Being a leader can be scary, but what better way to learn than

to be surrounded by people who are supporting your goals? (Daren Colbert,

January 26, 2016, The Importance of Joining Student Organizations in College.

Accessed August 4, 2018. https://www.collegexpress.com /articles-and-

advice/student-life/blog/importance-joining-student-organizations-college/)

Many extracurricular activities have proven to be beneficial in building

and strengthening academic achievement, even if the activities are not obviously

related to academic subjects (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002, para. 9). “A number of

studies revealed that students participating in extracurricular activities did better

academically than students who did not participate” (Marsh & Kleitman, 2002,

para. 7). Researchers have particularly studied the relationship between

extracurricular activities and academic performance in adolescents. One study

found that “adolescents who participated in extracurricular activities reported

higher grades, more positive attitudes toward school, and higher academic

aspirations” (Darling, Caldwell, & Smith, 2005, para. 1). Darling, Caldwell, and

Smith (2005) conducted a longitudinal study concerning extracurricular activities

and their effect on various aspects of development, including academic

performance. A survey containing a list of twenty different extracurricular

activities was distributed to students; they were asked to check which

extracurricular activities they participated in that year. Demographic questions,

such as their favorite activity, gender, and ethnicity were asked in order to take

the social factors and influences into account when calculating the results. The

students were also asked what their academic goals were and their grade point

average. The results showed that the students who participated in school-based

extracurricular activities had higher grades, higher academic aspirations, and

better academic attitudes than those who were not involved in extracurricular
activities at all (Kimiko Fujita. 2002-2016. The Effects of Extracurricular Activities

on the Academic Performance of Junior High Students. Accessed on August 4,

2018. http://www.kon.org/urc/v5/fujita.html)

Students who participate in extracurricular activities generally benefit from

the many opportunities afforded them. Benefits of participating in extracurricular

activities included having better grades, having higher standardized test scores

and higher educational attainment, attending school more regularly, and having

higher a higher self-concept. Participants in out-of-school activities often learned

skills such as teamwork and leadership while decreasing the likelihood of alcohol

use and illicit drug use and related problem behaviors. Those who participate in

out-of-school activities often have higher grade point averages, a decrease in

absenteeism, and an increased connectedness to the school. (Wilson, Nikki L.,

May, 2009, Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Student. Accessed August 4,

2018. https://www2.uwstout.edu /content /lib/thesis/ 2009/2009wilsonn.pdf)

Extracurricular activities can enhance a student’s school experience in

many ways. Talented athletes and actors can achieve acclaim for their talents,

while many school clubs and projects offer educational and social opportunities

that aren’t available in the classroom. However, extracurricular activities have

their negative aspects, too. Students should be aware of the potential pitfalls of

those activities to make sure their school experience is as positive as possible.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

I. Research Design

Case study was utilized in this study. It included interviewing only, and

non-participant observation. In order to gather the necessary data, the

researchers conduct interviews to fifteen (15) respondents, specifically,

grade-11 SHS students of Silliman University who are members of an

organization.

II. Research Environment

This research will be conducted at Silliman University, located at 1

Hibbard Ave., Dumaguete, 6200 Negros Oriental. This research focuses on

the insights of grdae-11 SHS students on theirs experiences as a member of

an organization.

III. Participants of the Study

Situated at Silliman University, Dumaguete City. The respondents of this

study will all be Grade 11 SHS students in Silliman University, considering

that they have the same amount of workload and mindset. The chosen

respondents must have experienced taking part in any event or activity in

their organization, either as a planner of event or as participant.

IV. Research Instrument

The researchers will come up with questions regarding on the impact of

joining an organization to the studies of grade-11 SHS students. The

questions will be originally made by researchers to know the experiences of

organization members. It will be conducted to grade-11 SHS students of

Silliman University, Dumaguete.

V. Data Collection Procedure

The researchers will conduct an interview to fifteen (15) grade-11 SHS

students of Silliman University who are members of an organization. After

collecting the data, the researchers will then asses, interrelate, and analyze

the significant differences of the data gathered.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

The following data was gathered from the interviews that were given

to the selected grade-11 senior high school students of Silliman University

who are organization members.

1. What is/are the reason/s why students choose to join an

organization?

- Most reasons on why students join an organization is because most

of their friends or classmates are joining, or has already joined that particular

organization as well. Some wanted to test out their capabilities, serve others,

become independent, and improve themselves. Socializing with other people

is another reason also, especially when they are engaged to working as a

team with other people. Students who were already part of an organization in

their previous years, wanted to continue their legacy in their organizations.

Another reason is because it aligns with their interests, and has activities that

will help them earn money. Lastly, respondents joined an organization with the

reason that it opens up to a lot of opportunities.

2. How does joining their organization beneficial to their studies?

-Based on the gathered data, there were some students who

haven’t found anything beneficial in joining their organizations towards their

studies yet, some also thought it was a waste of time. However, there were

others who found it beneficial to their studies for they have learned new

things from knowledgeable people on which they’ve applied to in their

studies. Other reasons were because now, they’ll have something to write

about in their reflection papers, it helps them to become responsible, and

some organizations resulted them to have a scholarship. Organizations also

taught them lessons that a classroom cannot, such as camaraderie,

teamwork, and a lot of experience. Students gained new information in their

organizations which were connected to their future studies, which seemed

like they had advanced lessons. Some found joining an organization

beneficial to their studies because it allowed them to learn how to balance

their studies and with their work in their organizations.

3. How do they manage their time?

- According to the gathered data, students manage their time by

setting goals or schedules for the day. They prioritize and tackle the more

important work or what matters more first than the other. Apparently, there are

others who have no problems with their time management, for either their

organizations aren’t that busy, or their schedules don’t conflict with their

classes. Some, choose to not attend their organization’s meetings at all.

4. Did they experience any downsides in joining their organization/s?

What are these downsides?

- Most of the respondents didn’t, or haven’t yet experienced any

downsides regarding their organizations so far. However, to those who have

experienced some downsides, their reasons were because it needed them to

provide free time for their responsibilities in the organization, leaving them

with less time, to no time towards self-enjoyment. Another thing is you’ll get to
experience working with other people, on which you may or may not like

them, for not everyone might cooperate with you sometimes. The

inconvenience of time is mostly the reason for everyone.

5. Would they recommend other people to join an org? Why?

-One of the reasons why students would recommend to join an

organization because they enjoy being with a group that helps to broaden

their connection with other people through strengthening each other when

one needs assistance. All of the respondents have recommended other

people to join an organization for it does not only engage in any social

activities and be able to meet good people but it moles every capabilities of a

member, it trains and helps to develop as a person. It is not only a way to

become better for oneself but it serves as a vessel towards unifying with our

community and world.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS

After conducting the survey and interpretation of data

gathered, the researchers were able to conclude the following:

Majority of the students join an organization because most of their

friends or classmates are joining, or has already joined that particular

organization as well. Some wanted to test out their capabilities, serve others,

become independent, and improve themselves. Being able to socialize with

other people is another reason as well. Students who were already part of an

organization in their previous years, wanted to continue their legacy in their

organizations. Another reason is because it aligns with their interests, and has

activities that will help them earn money. Lastly, students join an organization

with the reason that it opens up to a lot of opportunities.

Joining an organization equips students with more knowledge and skills

which are helpful to their studies, such as getting to learn new things from

knowledgeable people on which they’ve applied to in their studies. Other

reasons were because now, they’ll have something to write about in their

reflection papers, it helps them to become responsible, and some organizations

resulted them to have a scholarship. Organizations also taught them lessons

that a classroom cannot, such as camaraderie, teamwork, and a lot of

experience. Students gained new information in their organizations which were

connected to their future studies, which seemed like they had advanced

lessons. Some found joining an organization beneficial to their studies because

it allowed them to learn how to balance their studies and with their work in their

organizations.

Most of the students has their own way on managing their time. Some

even does the bigger task before starting the smaller tasks for them to be able

to passed before the deadlines of their tasks. They schedule their time perfectly

by prioritizing the things that are more important.

Being part of an organization comes along with advantages and

disadvantages. The advantages are being able to socialize with different people

with different levels in an organization, making it a big help when it comes to

studies, especially being a freshman/Senior high school student, it would be a lot

easier to stand in front of a class because being a part of an org does not only

give you the chance to meet new friends, but it also helps boost that confidence

that has been hiding in oneself.

When part of an organization, there will also be some downsides. Aside

from inconvenience in time, joining an organization has to deal with all sorts of

people. People that may not really give others the help they need. People that

are difficult to handle is somewhat a disadvantage on being a part of an

organization.
RECOMMENDATIONS

The following are highly recommended by the researchers:

• If one is planning to join an organization, one must think of the challenges that

may come along with it. Then decide whether he/she is up for it.

• If must be good at time-management, especially if he/she plans to become an

active member of an organization.

• Regarding this study, future researchers should conduct a survey to the

grade-12 senior high students of Silliman University as well to know their

insights or perception on the impact of joining an organization to their studies.

• To create a criteria on what specific people to interview.

• To add more questions to the survey questionnaire so that the objectives

and results will be more accurate and will give new information to the people.
