Vitae

– Dr Hassan Abbas
Dr Hassan Abbas is an expert in hydrology and water resources with more than
25 years of global experience spanning Asia, Australia, North/Central America,
the Middle East, Europe and international territories of Svalbard near the North
Pole.

He did his Bachelors in Civil Engineering from the Military College of Engineering,
Risalpur, Pakistan; did his Masters in Hydrogeology from the University of
Technology Sydney, Australia;
and, did his PhD in Hydrology and Water
Resources from Michigan State
University, USA.

The range of his experiences includes construction of hydel power projects; open
pit coal mining; coal fired
power plants; restoration/rehabilitation of wetlands
and forests; management of regional aquifers; inland river navigation;
development of river basin economy modules; numerical modelling of
environmental systems; hydroinformatics; web-based decision support systems;
water sensitive urban design (WSUD); negotiating and resolving trans-boundary
water issues; and, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) etc.

He has twice won American Water Resources
Association’s awards for


innovations in the USA. He established the first UNESCO Chair in Knowledge
Systems for IWRM in Pakistan.

Presently, Dr Abbas is part of Pakistan’s Track II diplomacy with Afghanistan on


Kabul River Basin. His current research areas are: prevention of pollution in
natural water resources; sustainable aquifer management in urban areas;
riverine well-field systems for irrigation; technology development for soil
moisture management on agriculture farms; restoration of riverine ecology; and
study of impacts of hydrological interventions upstream in Indus Basin on the
river’s delta downstream.

In his leisure time, Abbas pursues his hobbies that include oil-paintings, wildlife
photography and globetrotting.
