1.

Hy, my name is Henrietta and I will speak to you about my diploma

project that I’ve been working on this semester. My final project as a
student is a Museum an d biodiversity research centre at the Reed
reservation in Sic.

First, I would like to talk a bit about the reason WHY I choosed this place and this
program.

2. The reed reservation in Sic it’s the second largest reed covered filed
in Romania after the Danube Delta, around 505 hectares and is
known and protected because of the variety of migratory birds that
nest here , such as: the Ferruginous Duck, the Heron, Eurasian
bittern, Corn Crake and others.. This rich biodiversity can be observed
by taking a walk through the reed field on a 1 kilometer long wooden
path .

3. Beside this swampy area we can also find fields with a very high
concentration of salt,as you can see on the first picture, and with
very specific vegetation, like Salicornia with it’s red colour and the
purple Salt flower

4. Sic, from where the Reservation gotten his name is a village right next
to the reservation, is about 35 km from cluj. You can see here the
village on the north side of the reservation and with the red dot i
marked the site where I would like to position my building.

5. SIC has a very rich and uniqe history, tradition and culture like: folk
music and dance, traditional costumes, or straw hat craft. In the
village you can find old traditional thatched roof houses and churches
from the 18th century. Here you can also visit the collapsed salt mine
location or you can take a bath at the salty baths near the village.

6. Having this place so close to Cluj yet not as visited or known as it

should be I am trying to highlight the value of this area by a
combination of two programs: museum of nature that attracts and
educate the tourist about the importance of wildlife and preserving
this untouched areas and it’s biodiversity

7. and research centre that can help specialist to study and take care of
this reservation where you can find over 140 species of birds that live
in this reservation and many of them are protected.

8. The building site that I choosed at the end of the village Sic on a
hillside with a great view on the reed field. Having to build on site
with a slope will be a both structural and functional challenge but it
will also make the building more unique.

9. To take advantage of the slope, the main concept is to build the

museum as a path that climbes the slope until the highest point
where I will position an observation tower that will have a 360
degree perspective of the surroundings.

10. Here you can see a cross section of the building. This is just a
conceptual scketch but you can see the path that I was talking about
going up. Also I would like to create an inner courtyard that will set a
background for the museum exhibits

11. And finally, I will try to use local materials as wood, reed or stone.
Thatched roof, shading system made out of reed or a green roof will
help the building blend in with nature.

12. Thank you for your attention and wish me luck on making this
project succesfull!
