Dear KES Ohana and Community Members,

In commemoration and celebration of the late Senator Daniel K. Akaka and the legacy he left
behind, Playground Art Crew, Pena People, and Kane’ohe Elementary School invite you to a
Commemoration and Mural Ceremony. Senator Akaka, who was a principal at Kane’ohe Elementary
School for several years, made a large impact on education in Hawai’i, and has done so much for the
people and community.

The ceremony will highlight and reveal a mural created by artists Jeff Kaneta (Playground Art Crew),
Lauren Hana Chai (Pena People), and Lauren Okumoto (Pena People), who had the vision to create
something that would reflect community values and shine a light on inspirational people who have
truly made a difference and motivated many. The ceremony will also include an opportunity for
students to “leave their mark” by adding their handprint to the mural. After the reveal, and a few
words from our honored guests, the Akaka Family, Playground Art Crew and Pena People will host a
t-shirt printing session, as well as rock painting for the mural garden.

The mural has been painted on the Makai side of C-building, and can be seen on your way up from
the front office towards the cafeteria.

We hope you will join us in celebrating a powerful individual, message, and legacy.

Mahalo always,
The Mural Team

- Miyuki Sekimitsu, Derek Minakami, Ikaika Plunkett (3rd Grade, & Administration, KES)
- Jeff Kaneta (Playground Art Crew)
