right-side for graduates receiving bachelor’s degrees. Master’s
and doctoral candidates march in the procession with their
tassels on the left side signifying their previous degree or
degrees.

Please dress comfortably and wear comfortable footwear.

7
Graduating with honors
Graduation with distinction (cum laude, summa cum laude, magna
cum laude) recognizes academic excellence for the top 20% of
undergraduate students in each college/school and will be noted in the
Commencement program book only. This practice is only observed at
the undergraduate level.

Students who have completed the requirements for department and/

or University Honors are designated in the program book by (DH) for
department honors and/or a (UH) for University Honors. Your Honors
degree must be declared in your major for you to graduate with
Honors.

These students will receive a special stole to wear with their cap
and gown. You will be notified by the Irvin D. Reid Honors College
if you have met the criteria to receive the Honors distinction. The
commencement office does not issue honor stoles.

Program book
Your name will appear as it was typed or written on your graduation
application. There will be no program reprints to accommodate
incorrect spelling or missing names because of late graduation
applications. Due to publication deadlines, names and honors
designations of students added to, or changed from, the graduation
list after March 26 will not appear in the program.

Student names were submitted for the program book by your school
or college. If your name did not appear in the program, please contact
your school or college degree coordinator or the Office of Records at
(313) 577-3531 to verify your graduation eligibility.

Program books will be available at the entrance to Matthaei for guests,

and in the seating areas reserved for graduates.

8
Additional Information
Degree status
Diplomas will be mailed following
certification of your degree. If you have
questions about the status of your
diploma, call your school or college
advisor or the Office of the Registrar.

met all graduation requirements.

Your diploma or official transcript cannot be released if you have
financial obligations to the university. For questions about financial

Commencement etiquette
Commencement is an important and memorable occasion for all
graduates and their families. Leaving before the ceremony has ended is
disruptive and disrespectful of others. Guests should plan on remaining
for the entire ceremony.

Ceremony conduct
We are as delighted and excited as you are
that you have a graduate of Wayne State
University being honored. Please refrain
from excessive cheering, use of noisemakers,
and other distractions as this takes away
from the dignity of the ceremony. Watches
with alarms, cell phones, and beepers can
be distracting and annoying as well. In
consideration of your graduate and other
guests on this momentous occasion, please
turn such devices off or to vibrate.
