Prince William makes Bake Off joke as he pokes fun at his own
cooking skills
by Katie Frost

Prince William put his cooking skills on display during a visit to The Passage, the UK's
largest resource centre for homeless people. The Duke of Cambridge, who was named patron
of the charity earlier on Wednesday, was photographed chopping carrots as he helped
volunteers make spaghetti bolognese for the lunchtime service.

In one clip shared on Twitter by royal reporter Richard Palmer, William could be heard
joking with the volunteers that they were running out of time before their midday deadline.

"We've got 10 minutes to do all this," he said, while pointing to a pile of carrots that needed
preparing. In a nod to the Great British Bake Off, where contestants often feel the time
pressure, he added: "I feel Mary Berry's going to pop out in a minute and tell us we're being
too slow."

The team effort must have paid off as the royal visitor was later seen serving the bolognese
he had helped to prepare to guests.
It was a poignant appearance for William, who first visited The Passage as a child in 1993
with his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. His entry can still be seen alongside his mother's
signature in the charity's visitor book.
The Duke of Cambridge first visited The @PassageCharity as a child in 1993 with his mother
Diana, Princess of Wales, and has made additional visits at various points over the last
twenty-five years.

Speaking at the organisation in 2016, he said (via Kensington Palace): "The visits I made as a
child to this place left a deep and lasting impression upon me – about how important it is to
ensure that everyone in our society, especially the poorest, are treated with respect, dignity
and kindness, and are given the opportunities to fulfil their potential in life."

While William was busy in the kitchen, Kate attended a separate engagement in London on
Wednesday, at the Royal Foundation’s ‘Mental Health in Education’ conference. The
Duchess met with head teachers from schools involved in Heads Together's Mentally Health
School programme that she launched last year.
