The dugong

The dugong is the smallest member of the order of the Sirenia.


The name ‘Dugong’ , wich ,means “lady of the sea” or “mermaid”. The
best chance to encounter the dugongs is in northern Australian water
were most of their populations live.

Dugongs don’t see the well, instead they use their acute hearing.
They feed in the shallow waters on sea grass with the aid of coarse,
sensitive bristless, wich cover the upper lip of their large and fleshy
snout. Remember they are closely related to elephent? Dugong males
have small tusks, which they usu during the mating sesason to chalange
other dugongs.

his animal is protected by the state because the existence of


dugong is very important for maintaining marine ecosystems and many
other fish species that coexist in the region. If one is damaged then the
other will be affected. therefore, we must preserve it and protect the
environment.
