Braille smartwatch lets blind read texts

A South Korean startup has created an active Braille smartwatch for the visually impaired
that can be read by touch. Aptly named Dot, the wearable relays the time with a set of pins
that rise and fall. Users will be able to receive and read text messages in real time, read e-
books and even learn Braille.

Dot, its creators claim, is the first affordable smartwatch for the visually challenged that uses
haptic technology. Twenty-four active pins on its surface, spread across four cells, allow it to
display four Braille characters at a time. The smartwatch lets users read information in real-
time by linking to any of their Bluetooth-enabled devices.

For instance, when a user receives a text message on their mobile phone, an app translates
it into Braille and sends it to the smartwatch via Bluetooth. Dot’s internal vibrator motor
alerts the user to the message or notification and the display automatically shifts from telling
time to displaying the notification. Pins corresponding to the pattern protrude from Dot’s
surface, allowing users to read the information with their fingertips.

Apart from relaying information, the smartwatch can also help users learn Braille with a
sound-Braille sync function. For instance, if an app on a mobile device reads out the letter
"p," Dot will display the same letter in Braille. Koh says that they plan to expand this feature
and add more functionality to offer a comprehensive learning experience.

The company’s founders also have plans to create a public module that integrates the core
Braille technology into machines like ATM’s and information kiosks at transit stations and
public place.

Una nueva empresa surcoreana ha creado un reloj inteligente que usa braile para las
personas con discapacidad visual que puede ser leído y tocado. Acertadamente nombrado
Dot (punto en inglés), el dispositivo da la hora con un set botones que suben y bajan. Los
usuarios podrán recibir y leer mensajes de texto en tiempo real, leer libros en formato digital
e incluso aprender braile.

Los creadores de Dot aseguran que es el primer reloj inteligente accesible para las
personas con discapacidad visual que usa tecnología táctil. Hay 24 botones en su
superficie que se extienden en cuatro celdas, permitiendo que se muestren 4 caracteres de
braile a la vez. El reloj inteligente permite a los usuarios leer información en tiempo real
mediante la conexión a cualquier dispositivo con bluetooth.

Por ejemplo, cuando un usuario recibe un mensaje de texto en su teléfono celular, una
aplicación lo traduce a braile y lo envía al reloj inteligente vía bluetooth. El motor vibrador
interno de Dot alerta al usuario del mensaje o notificación y la pantalla automáticamente va
de mostrar la hora a mostrar la notificación. Los botones correspondientes al patrón
sobresalen de la superficie, permitiendo a los usuarios leer la información con sus dedos.

Aparte de transmitir información, el reloj inteligente puede ayudar a los usuarios a aprender
braile con una función sincronizada de sonido y caracteres. Por ejemplo, si una aplicación
en un dispositivo móvil tiene la letra “p”, será leída en voz alta y Dot mostrará la misma letra
en braile. “El plan es expandir esta característica y agregar más funcionalidad para ofrecer
una experiencia de aprendizaje compresivo” dijo Koh.

Los fundadores de la compañía también tienen planes para crear un modelo púbico que
integra el núcleo de la tecnología braile en máquinas como cajeros automáticos y puestos
de información e estaciones de transporte y espacios públicos.
