METHODOLOGY

This chapter will discuss the process and method that the researchers will use in

conducting the study. Description on the gathering of necessary data and information is

included in this chapter.

Research Design

This study is a descriptive-quantitative type of research. The researchers will be

describe and analyse the data and information to be gathered about the subject or topic.

The amount of solid waste production will be described through its volume and the

knowledge, attitude and practices of the participants along the Ikloy River sub-watershed

will be determined as well.

Materials

The following materials will be used during the conduct of the study:

1. Camera for taking photos during the interviews and for the documentation;

2. Garbage bag for collecting of the solid wastes in the study area;

3. Trash trap for obtaining solid wastes that are thrown or dumped into the river;

4. Weighing scale for measuring the weight of the collected solid waste;

5. Gloves and face masks will be used for sanitation and safety precaution;

6. Interview guide for conducting the interview;

7. Survey form for obtaining needed data about the participants;

8. Data sheets for gathering and record keeping of the data; and

9. ArcMap 10.2 for identifying the boundaries of the study area.

Methods

Mapping of the study site and the baranggays within Ikloy River water

system through GIS and Remote Sensing. The study site will be mapped to show its

boundaries against the whole watershed (Figure 1). The barangays within the Ikloy River

water system will also be mapped for the identification of the boundaries and the location

of the study site (Figure 2).

Measurement of the amount and calssification of solid waste in Ikloy River.

Trash traps will be set within the study site to collect solid waste within the Ikloy River

and measure the amount of solid waste once a week for one month. The collected solid

waste will also be classified according to type: compastable, recyclable, residual, or

special wastes.

Determination of knowledge, attitude, and practises of the communities in

Ikloy River towards solid. An interview will be conducted within the community to

determine their knowledge about solid waste management disposal in the study area. The

same interview with the selected participants within the study site will also determine

their attitude and practices towards the solid waste management in the area. The number

of participants for the survey will be determined through the use of Slovin’s formula.
n = N / ( 1 + Ne2 )

n = sample size

N = population size

e = margin of error (10%)

Data analysis and interpretation. The data gathered will be analyzed and be

presented in graphs and figures. Conclusion will be made based on the data gathered

through the conduct of the study.

Identification of mitigating measures for the study site. Mitigating measures

will be identified to help the community in solving their solid waste management

problems in Ikloy River water system.
