Performance Task No.

1: Numbers in Nature

Objectives: (1) To realize that mathematics is a study of patterns.


(2) To demonstrate that mathematics is observable in nature and in our environment.
(3) To be able to share with your group-mates your observations and skills in producing a
project that proves that numbers are found in nature and in our environment.
(4) To realize that mathematics is fun.

Procedure:

(1) Form a group of 5 to 6 members, and choose a leader.


(2) Create an art work (painting, sketch, 3-D model, diorama, etc.) on the chosen topic.
(3) Present a video, showing the following:
 the making of the project, showing the participation of the members of the group
 an explanation of the project
(4) Post the finished video on our group page. Indicate the title of the project and name the
members of the group.
(5) Each member of the group must submit a reflection on:
A. the topic, and
B. the project.

Deadline: January 28-30, 2019

Note: There will be separate grades for the project, the video, and the reflection. The project and the
video are performance tasks (PETA) for the group, while the reflection is an individual Written
Work.

1. Insects and other animals
2. Plants/flowers
3. Human Anatomy – human body, faces, DNA molecule,
– Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Vitruvian Man, and the Last Supper
4. Music
5. Galaxies, ocean currents, hurricanes
6. Buildings – the Pyramids, the Parthenon, Taj Mahal, spiral staircase
7. The Golden Rectangle, the Golden Ratio, the Rabbit Family
