Pragmatic analysis

The work focuses on analysis of a speech according to the principles and rules of pragmatics. The work
includes attempts to find hidden meaning of what orator is said, using implicature or presupposition.
This achieved by comprehension of the context and message of the utterance, inferred intent of the
orator, background and pre-existing knowledge of the speaker and his/her position to the topic of
utterance. In this work I tried to focus on identifying performative verbs and to which group a
particular verb is parti. Locution and Illocution and Perlocution

For the analysis I choose the speech, which was delivered by Hillary Clinton at 4th World Conference on
Women in Beijing in 1995 was chosen. Hillary Clinton is the US politician, former First Lady, former
U.S. Senator. Her, one of the most famous speech, “Women's Rights are Human Rights” will be
analyzed according to the pragmatic framework. I choose this act in particular because I am interested
in position of woman in modern century, in communities, families and different nations.

Analysis of the speech based on pragmatics:

The main purpose of the act, according to Clinton’s words, is to achieve greater equality and
opportunity for women around the world. That can be proofed by the following extracts from the
speech:

“(…) women will never gain full dignity until their human rights are respected and
protected.”

“The great challenge of this conference is to give voice to women everywhere whose
experiences go unnoticed, whose words go unheard.”

“(…) It is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human

rights.”

“If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human
rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights once and for all.”

Clinton was the very outspoken First Lady

The conference was prepared in order to achieve greater equality and opportunity for women around
the world, which is the overall purpose of Clinton's act. She addressed problems that needed to be
corrected in countries around the world, including the United States.
purpose of the act.

she implements a form of agency, by listing several contributions to the world that women make,
from working at home, having jobs, being mothers, to being leaders.
This allows people to know instantly where the agent (Clinton) stands.

In the beginning, she shows a form of agency by listing contributions to the world that women
make. The list included things from being leaders, working at home, having jobs, and being mothers.
The list of responsibilities that women uphold, used in the very beginning, immediately shows what
women are capable of doing. This allows the audience to know where the agent (Clinton) stands.

The following extract from the speech illustrates the illocutionary act of the text:
From the extract stated above, the writer intends to convey that
The word “let” refers to her unhappiness with marriage to him. In this short story, the third person
author uses literary figures of speech like irony as the following extract shows:
The irony is clearly stated in the above extract.
The illocutionary act of the text occurs when the jeweler tells her:

To conclude, the intention of the writer is to tell us how life is changeful and easy thing can make our
life good or turn it into a despair situation. He also wants to convey that lie is the source of disasters
and unpleasant situation. If Madam Loisel and her husband had not lied, they would not have lived in
a miserable situation for ten years. The reader also benefits from the events of the story because it
gives him an effective advice to be honest, realistic and to tell the truth.
