I Learned from My Dogs

The book of Genesis tells us that in the Garden of Eden, humans
had dominion over all of the beasts in the field, birds in the air,
and fish in the sea. In this day and age. even with the hundreds of
thousands of species inhabiting the earth, only one of these crea
tures has earned (he title of man's best friend. As friends to their
masters. protectors of our households, and playmates of our chil
dren, dogs hold very special places in our culture. No other ani
maJ is as revered and loved.
J have two dogs: Kira, my personal favorite, a 4-ycar.old
chow-cotlie mix that we rescued from the Humane Society, and
Lucy. a blond cocker spaniel that a friend found abandoned and
wandering in their neighborhood. I am an observer of life. and I
enjoy watching things happen around me. So it is no surprise that
J spend a good bit of my time around the house watching my
dogs. They spend time together and alone, and they exhibit their
own unique personalities in everything they do. They are actually
a lot more pleasant to have around than a lot of people I know. By
watching my dogs, I have learned a good bit about life in general,
and particularly about life in the professional world.
We, as professional engineers, are college graduates. We cer
tainly can (and usually do) argue about how our school is better
than any other. However, in most cases, colleges of engineering in
the United States provide a high-quality education to all of their
students. During our years in college (four, five, six, or more for
some of us), we learned a great deal about formulas, solutions,
theories. assumptions, design processes, and analytical methods.
Basically, we learned how to effectively address and solve prob
lems. We learned how to do engineering and by studying hard and
applying our best efforts, we learn how to do it as well as Or better
than the other guy. However, I have observed through my work
and teaching experiences that although colleges do a pretty good
job teaching engineers how to perform good engineering, they do
not generally take lip the task of teaching them how to be good
engineers. Make no mistake, there is a definite difference
between
these two skill sets. Knowing how to arrive at the right answer
is
important, even critical, to becoming a successful engineer. It is
important, but it is not enough. To be a good engineer, one must
become knowledgeable and proficient in a number of areas not
ordinarily taught in school or, unfortunately in many cases, On the
job.
So what does all of tbis have to do with my dogs? As I men
tioned, I have learned a lot by watching my dogs interact with
each other, my family, and the people and pets in my neighbor
hood. Believe it or not, they exhibit a lot of the skills needed to be
a good professional. 1 can understand a certain degree of skepti
cism on this point, but bear with me as we explore lessons that I
learned from my dogs that have helped me to become a better
engineer.

It's Not What You Know
My home includes a rather large backyard that is surrounded by a
stockade fence. For the first year that Kira (the chow-collie nux)
was with us, she enjoyed running and playing in the yard. When
she was a little over a year old, my neighbor got a golden re
triever named Molly. Molly and Kira became fast friends, and we
allowed them to visit one another several times a week. After
Molly was about 6 months old, she became unsatisfied with the
frequency of the visits and figured out how to dig under the fence
separating Our yard from her own, after which she came to visit at
her leisure. One day I was walking in the yard and saw Kim and
Molly going through a newly dug hole under the fence into the
neighbor's yard. It occurred to me that Kim had not strayed from
our yard until she was taught how to do so by her friend, Molly.
J don', know if she would have ever figured out how to do it on
her own or whether she would have even had the desire to do so.
She learned how to do it only because of her relationship with her
pal next door.
I remember, while growing up. that my dad was fond of the
adage, "It's not what you know, but who you know," I always
thought that perspective was a bit cynical, but as 1 grew into my
profession, I learned that the "what" and the "who" are not rnu
tually exclusive.
We certainly have to know the "what" in order to become
successful engineers. We can't get very far in the profession if we
do not have the technical knowledge needed to solve problems. lt
is important for us to learn the basics in college and continue to
learn through both our daily work and a regular dose of formal
continuing education. However, my dad wasn't completely
wrong. The "who" is also a critical element to success. No One
can become successful entirely on their own. We need others, in
various capacities, to help us along the way. We must, from a very
early point in our careers, begin to form relationships with OUI
coworkers, Clients. and supervisors. Eventually, we build a group
of mentors and friends in the business who can help us when \VC
need them. Kira couldn't make it alone-and neither can
we.
It's Not My Fault!
My dogs like to play together in the house. Sometimes, they get a
little too raucous in their play and end up knocking something
onto the floor. On one occasion. the something was a potted plant
that fen off of the plant holder onto the tile 600r. breaking the
clay pot and scattering the soil Over the dining room. Upon hear
ing the noise, I rushed to the dining room only to find the broken
pot on the floor and my cute and very guilty-loolUng cocker,
Lucy, standing amidst the mess. Kira was nowhere to be found.
After a few minutes of calling and coaxing, Kira appeared with a
casual "who me?" Look on her face, walked over to the pot,
sniffed it, and went back to her favorite resting spot. Clearly, her
message to me was, "I don't know what happened, but it's not my
fault. You may want to talk to the blond chick." Lucy, on the
other hand, took full responsibility for her actions by waiting for

cept. My dogs are no exception to this rule. When rbey sense
danger. they will always interpose themselves between the per
ceived threat and my wife or children. Even when I do not treat
them especially well. (hey always show me that they are (here
when I need (he Ill. I'm sure that some of this behavior is
related
to the fact that I feed them and give them a comfortable place to
sleep, but I provide these same things for my kids and don't often
get the same loyal response from them.
We don't talk about loyalty much anymore. It seems to be a
somewhat outdated concept. There was a day when the loyal
American worker spent hislher entire work life with a single com
pany, retiring with appreciation, a gold watch, and a pension all
provided by the loyal employer. Something happened in the latter
part of the 20th century that caused both the worker and the
employer to lose failh in each other. Loyalty from both directions
disappeared and was replaced by cynicism and a "what have you
done for me lately" mentality. Lifelong associations. with a single
company or organization, are almost nonexistent in today's work
world. Professionals in general and engineers in particular arc
certainly OOtimmune from this condition, Even a cursory review
of a stack of resumes quickly shows the staccato career paths
chosen by an increasing number of young (and not so young)
engineers. What is it that causes this to happen? Or maybe we
should ask whether this lack of loyalty is such a bad thing after
all? Maybe loyalty is just a concept that has already seen its time.
I, for one. believe (hal loyalty remains a very noble and iln
portam ambition for everyone including engineers. Consider that
as we work for Our companies and organizations, we fonn rela
tionships, We help to mold a certain culture, and \\'C change to
adopt the ideas of others. If we care at .11 about what we do, we
end up investing a great deal of emotional capital in our employ
mcnt situation. When we move from one employer to another, we
squander this investment and begin the cycle again. This quickly
becomes very expensive to our psyche. So. for the moment. forget
about the nobility of this quality. and think about the concept of
enlightened self interest. Disloyalty. in general. is simply too
emotionaily expensive. Also, remember the law of diminishing
resistance. A.s""C go from one opportunity to another, whether it
is with marriages, relationships. or employment situations. our
resistance 10 giving up and moving on the next time wanes, It
simpty becomes easier and easier to change. and we continually
lose our emotional Investment.
Conversely. employers cannot afford to be disloyal to staff
members, The most valuable commodity (0 any engineering or
ganization is the staff, As mentioned previously. the number of
students who choose engineering as a profession is decreasing
and replacing staff members is becoming more difficult and ex
pensive every year. According to WoJlStree: Journal science col
umnist Sharon Begley, the number of students graduaung with
engineering bachelor degrees has declined steadily for the past 17
year'S. In her recent arucle, "As we lose engineers, who will take
us into the future?" (Begley 20(H) she reported that engineering
students peaked at 77.572 in 1985 and then decreased to 60.914
by 1998. LOSing potential engineering students because they
sense a feeling of not belonging 01' disloyally is inexcusably bad
business.
Whether we accept loyalty as a noble quality 10 which we
ascribe. or as a path of self-interest, we should, as employees and
employers, consider its importance to our combined -uccess and
work diligently lO inscribe it into our personal and business cut
lures.
I Trust You
One of the selling points for our house is the undeveloped land
that is behind our property. Originally an orange grove, this land
is nO\Va combination of open field. woods. and abandoned mil
road right-of-way, Someday this property will be developed and

When we walk Out there, the dogs usually stay close to me for
the first few minutes, but as soon as they see where J am headed,
they go off a bit. exploring on their own. As lhey run On and off
the trail. they frequently look back to make sure that I am still
heading in their direction. The minute I turn around to return
home, they stop their wandering and run to follow Ole. I am
always struck by the fact that as long as J choose to go to a certain
part of the property. they are willing and anxious to follow. They
have absolute trust thaI I will not take them into harm's \vay. As
long as a place is okay for me, it is okay for them.
As engineers. we are constantly faced with producing deliver
abies for our clients. Whether we write reports. produce plans. or
prepare specifications. we arc required. in most cases. to deliver
SOIne final product, However, reports, plans. and specifications
are no more than paper and ink if the user cannot count on the
information included therein. As engineers. we don't sell shoes.
cars. homes, 01' real estate: the primary product we sell to people
in society is trust. They truSt that we have conducted ourselves
ethically and professionally. They trust that we truly understand
the work and have properly engineered the result. They trust that
we arc charging a fair fcc and that we have considered their COStS
while preparing our designs. They trust that we are telling them
the truth and considering their best interests. They trust that we
care. Probably the worst sin that an engineer can commit is to
violate this trust. Therefore, in order to be good engineers \I,'C
must first become trustworthy people.
Earning the respect of society is critical to our profession. So
is earning the respect of one another. We must endeavor to build
trusting relationships with our associates. ernployees. and even
our competitors. Although most of us arc also business people, we
cannot alloy.' the common. cynical, selfish business approach to
obscure the essence of our practice. \Vinning means nothing if it
requires us to erode a valuable commodity such as trust. I Ire
quemly counsel my graduating students rcgardmg employment
opportunities. and [ am consistent with my advice. I tell them that
as (hey look for an organization Or company with which to asso
ciate. the)' should, above all other considerations. work for people
whom they Can trust. Fat paychecks and big offices mean little to
working engineers if they cannot believe that their superiors are
trustworthy and have their best interests at heart.
Relax
There are days when it seems that my dogs do nothing bUI sleep.
Although they enjoy playing and going (or walks III the neighbor
hood, which is essential to happy doghood, they never seem more
content than when they are sacked out. Lucy can sleep just about
anywhere. One of her favorite places is the top of the lumi Iy roo

sofa, with one of her front and real' paws hanging over the edge
(for stability I guess). \Ve can always tell when -he has been
asleep for a while. Her tongue, which is tOOlarge for her mouth.
slowly begins to stick out of her mouth, and after a h~\\ minutes it
gets really dry. My kids get some kind of weird thrill by waking
her up and watching her try to moisten her tongue. Krra also has

a few select sleeping spots. Her' favorite place is under [he bed in
the master bedroom. She crawls into this narrow space. leaving
onty her bushy tail slicking OUI in the open. Both of my dogs
certainly understand how to balance the activiry in their lives with
rest and relaxation.
I remember some advice 1'1'01o1n) e or "'Y first mentors in
the

always try to get to work before nly supervisor and leave only
.fler he had left, He rell that by always being available 10 my
boss, I would show my cornmitmenr to him and to the company.
For the 3 years that [ worked for Ihal company. t can'r remember
a day when I didn't succes .s.f.ully follow this advice. My boss
was pretty committed to working. so this meant that I spent
quite a
few JOJlg days at the office and 6O-houl' work weeks became
common.
Through most of my career, 1 have been active in technical and
professional societies. 1 have attended many award banquets
where members of these societies were recognized for their ac
complishments. On almost every occasion, the individual being
recognized gives a short speech thanking everyone who comrib
uied 10 his/her success. Invariably, tbe recipient apologizes 10
their spouse and family for working long hours and not being
home where he/she was needed. This mandatory apology is a sort
of badge of honor; proof that the individual has paid the appro
priate dues, How sad.
Obviously, as professionals. engineers are committed to effec
lively discharging their duties. and this is nOIoften accomplished
in a 9-10-5 workday. Meering deadlines. schedules, and due dales
frequently requires burning the proverbial midnight oil. These
long hours at the office mean thai the other pans of OUr lives will
be affected, Some of this is simply part of the job and unavoid
able. However, there is a line we CrOSS when we cease to control
our schedule and instead become slaves 10 the long hours. When
this happens, we begin a long slide that will eventually have a
negative effect On both Our lives and Our work.
The book of Genesis recounts how. after creating the universe
in 6 days, God rested on the 71h day. [ always thought that was a
bit odd. Was God winded? Were his muscles sore? Did God need
10 lie back. pop open a cold one. and watch a game On television?
Of course not. A God with the power to Create (he universe is not
likely 10 gel tired doing ir, So. if God didn't need the rest, why sci
the 71h day aside? After a good deal of study, [ Ihink I undersland
the reason. A day of rest is set aside not so much for us to sleep
late. but to have time to do other things besides work. We need
time to broaden Our lives and to learn to enjoy a wide range of
activities and interests that have nothing at all to do with our
profession. Even an experienced pilot takes time away from look
ing at his instruments and lifts his head to look at the sky outside
of the cockpit. We 100 should lake enough lime from our work
commitments to enjoy the rest that life offers.
Conclusion
The engineering profession will be beuer served by engineers
working every day to become good engineers. Some of the re
quired proficiencies and skills can be learned through diligent
continuing education. However, many of the corc qualities can
only be obtained by changing the way we look at ourselves and
our profession. We must accept thaI we are people first and fore
most, and that Our professional outlook will be derived from the
type of person that we become. Engineers must know their limits,
They must go through their careers and lives and inevitably de
velop into some type of engineer. Remember that our educational
experience doesn't end at college graduation. In many respects.
our journey 10 learn Ihe important facets of our profession begins
on that day, However. this time there are no class schedules Or
course outlines. and the only prerequisites are the willingness to
look beyond the obvious and maybe to pay attention to what a
dog might be telling you.

El libro del Génesis nos dice que en el Jardín del Edén, los
humanos tenían el dominio sobre todas las bestias en el campo, los

con los cientos de miles de especies que habitan en la tierra, sólo
uno de estos turas CREA ha ganado (l título del mejor amigo del
hombre. Como amigos a sus amos. protectores de nuestros
hogares, y los compañeros de juego de nuestros ni- chil, perros
mantenga muy especial lugares en nuestra cultura. Ningún otro
MAJ ani es tan venerado y amado.
J tiene dos perros: Kira, mi favorito personal, a 4 ycar.old mezcla
chow-cotlie que rescatamos de la sociedad humana, y Lucy. un
cocker spaniel rubio que un amigo encontrado abandonado y
vagando en su vecindario. Soy un observador de la vida. y me
gusta ver las cosas suceden a mi alrededor. Por lo tanto, no es

estos dos conjuntos de habilidades. Saber cómo llegar a la
respuesta correcta es

ingeniero. Es importante, pero no es suficiente. Para ser un buen
ingeniero, uno debe adquirir conocimientos y competentes en una
serie de áreas que no se enseñan normalmente en la escuela o,
