Preface
The rich data from every decennial Census captures a snapshot of the socio –economic,
th
demographic and cultural profile of the country at a particular point of time. Census 2011 is the 15 of the
Censuses that have been conducted every decade since 1872 and is the seventh after Independence.
Census of India 2011 was carried out in two phases. The first phase namely the Houselisting and Housing
st th
Census, was conducted in Tamil Nadu during 1 June 2010 to 15 July 2010 and the second phase
th th
called Population Enumeration was undertaken between 9 to 28 February 2011.
This publication - “Primary Census Abstract- Data Highlights, Tamil Nadu”, depicts the final data
from Census 2011 on various parameters such as Population, Child population in the age-group of 0-6
years, Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe population, Literacy and Work classification. The data sets
relating to Work status present data based on duration of work (main and marginal) as well as the broad
category of work (Cultivators, Agricultural Labourers, Household Industry Workers and other Workers).
The gender composition and the residence status of each set of data have also been presented at District
level. In this publication, 48 Statements, 13 graphs and 21 maps have been included. The data at Sub-
district (Tehsil), Town (ward) and Village level would be released subsequently in electronic version.
I would like to acknowledge my gratitude to the Officials of the State Government especially the
Principal Census Officers, Charge Officers and Special Charge Officers for the smooth and successful
conduct of this gigantic national task in Tamil Nadu. Dr. N.Sundaradevan IAS, Principal Secretary and
Commissioner of Revenue Administration, as the State coordinator has been a pillar of strength and
guided us all through this exercise. I am thankful to him for his support and guidance.
I am very grateful to Dr. C. Chandramouli, IAS, Registrar General and Census Commissioner,
India for his leadership, encouragement and guidance to us at every stage of Census 2011. I express my
sincere thanks to Shri. R.C.Sethi, Additional Registrar General, India and his team of officers at ORGI for
their support and efforts taken.
I have to place on record, my heartfelt appreciation to my team of Officials at this Directorate for
their tremendous efforts that ensured the effective and successful conduct of Census Operations in the
field and thereafter for scrutinizing and finalizing the data. This output would not have been possible
without the painstaking efforts of all the enumerators, supervisors and field functionaries who had taken
strenuous efforts to complete their tasks within the stipulated time. I hope this publication stands up to the
requirements of data users.
