Module-9: Clutches

1) Derive the relationship between the torque, actuating force, coefficient

of friction and minimum & maximum radii of the friction lining for old
and new single plate friction clutch.

2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of conical clutches

compared with plate friction clutches?

3) What is self-engagement in conical clutches?

4) Which clutch is used to delay the startup of drafting rollers in ring

spinning machine? Explain how does it work?

5) A centrifugal clutch has four shoes each of 1.5 kg. The radius of center
of gravity of the shoe is 110mm when the clutch is engaged. The inner
radius of the drum is 140 mm. The coefficient of friction between the
shoes and inner face of drum is 0.3. The load on the spring at beginning
of engagement is 700 N. The running speed is 1440 rpm. Calculate the
speed at which engagement begins and power transmitted by the clutch
at operating speed.

6) A centrifugal clutch transmitting 20 kW at 750 rpm consists of 4 shoes.

The clutch is to be engaged at 500 rpm. The inner radius of drum is 165
mm, while the radius of centre of gravity of the shoes in the engaged
position is 140 mm. The µ is 0.3. Calculate the mass of each shoe (Kg).

7) A centrifugal clutch mounted on motor shaft transmits 8.1 kW and has

shoes each weighing one kg. The operating speed of motor is 960 rpm.
The clutch is designed to engage when the motor attains 75% of its
operational speed. The inner radius of drum is 130 mm. The coefficient
of friction between the shoe and drum is 0.25. The spring constant of
spring holding the block is 30 N/mm. The spring would stretch by 20
mm while the shoes contact the inner drum. What is the radius of centre
of gravity of shoes while the clutch engages? How many shoes are there
in the clutch?
