TREADMILL BICYCLE

A treadmill is a device generally for walking or running while staying in the same place.
Treadmills were introduced before the development of powered machines, to harness the power of
animals or humans to do work, often a type of mill that was operated by a person or animal treading
steps of a tread wheel to grind grain. In later times, treadmills were used as punishment devices for
people sentenced to hard labour in prisons. The terms treadmill and tread wheel were used
interchangeably for the power and punishment mechanisms. More recently, treadmills are not used
to harness power, but as exercise machines for running or walking in one place. Rather than the user

powering the mill, the machine provides a moving platform with a wide conveyor belt driven by an
electric motor or a flywheel. The belt moves to the rear, requiring the user to walk or run at a speed
matching that of the belt. The rate at which the belt moves is the rate of walking or running. The
simpler, lighter, and less expensive versions passively resist the motion, moving only when walkers
push the belt with their feet. The latter are known as manual treadmills. The mechanism of the latter
treadmills is used for travelling. The conveyor belt is coupled to the wheels of the treadmill traveller
by a suitable arrangement. Using the solar power, the motion is delivered to the treadmill setup and
also the walking is done simultaneously. This project is based on the idea of the conventional
treadmills.

MODERN TREADMILL BICYCLE

Kachare jaydeep This paper deals with conversion of a conventional bike into treadmill bike. In
this bike the frame of the bike is completely modified and the treadmill is placed in between the
two wheels, on which user will walk. As the user walks or runs on the treadmill the belt moves to
the rear. At the rear roller RPM Sensor is attached to the roller from where Sensor will sense the
speed of the roller and accordingly it will send signal to motor. The motion of motor is transmitted
to the front wheel by which we can get the motion of wheel and bike runs. [1]

Wagh Ganesh Sadashiv Treadmill Bike is one type of bike in which a man walks on the treadmill
and then treadmill moves backward. The motion of treadmill bike is depending upon the human
efforts so it is also called as walking bike. Multipurpose treadmill bike consists the parts like
wheels, treadmill, battery, sprocket, chain drive, and dynamo. [2]

Pranav Gujar The following paper deals with conversion and combination of a conventional
tricycle and the most popular home exercise equipment, the treadmill, into a commuting vehicle.
In this tricycle, the frame of the tricycle is entirely modified and treadmill is placed between three
wheels, on which the user will run. As the user walks or runs, the belt moves over the rollers that
are attached to the shaft with a chain drive. This chain drives the rear wheels of the tricycle which
produces motion for the front wheels and thus the tricycle runs. [3]

industries. While the innovations are going all around, our team has applied innovation to the
vehicle makes it more unique than any vehicle currently in the mainstream markets. As we all
know ozone is depleting day by day, we thought to make such vehicle which is free from the
Exhaust of particulate matter (PM) and harmful gases such as NOx (oxides of nitrogen), CO
(carbon monoxide) etc. Our works basically an Eco- Friendly Bike. It is based on Future
innovative vehicles. We just want to create “A New Way of Moving”. It is a fun and
environmental friendly way of transport. We have moto behind this project that everyone can jog
without getting their shoes dirty. A person from any age can drive this bike. Moreover, it has the
same looks for both the Men and Women. People can drive this bike in any dress rather a
traditional Indian dress or Western dress. The idea behind this bike is how we can use treadmill
outside the Gym. It takes no more effort to walk “than a walk in a park”. All other innovations in
transport results in increasing costs of Vehicles but our motive is to bring back the basic mode of
transport back on roads i.e. bicycle in a newer way in an affordable price as compare to other
vehicles.[4]

V.R.Ghandhewar In an ancient day’s concept of treadmill was invented for generating mechanical
energy with the help of animals such as horse, dogs etc. First treadmill was introduced by Roman
Empire for heavy loading like conveyer belt which we use in industries. Some of those invention
required electric power for initial torque. After study the history of treadmill bike we get idea to
develop new concept of treadmill which will manually operate so that no external energy source is
required to run treadmill bike. Our main objective while developing this concept is “A Treadmill

COMPONENTS OF TREADMILL BICYCLE

3.1 BATTERY:

Fig no: 3.1

The lead–acid battery was invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Plante and is the oldest
type of rechargeable battery. Despite having a very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-
to-volume ratio, its ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells have a relatively large
power-toweight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, make them attractive for use in
motor vehicles to provide the high current required by automobile starter motors. As they are
inexpensive compared to newer technologies, lead–acid batteries are widely used even when surge
current is not important and other designs could provide higher energy densities. In 1999 lead–
acid battery sales accounted for 40–45% of the value from batteries sold worldwide excluding
China and Russia, and a manufacturing market value of about $15 billion. Large-format lead–acid
designs are widely used for storage in backup power supplies in cell phone towers, high-
availability settings like hospitals, and stand-alone power systems. For these roles, modified
versions of the standard cell may be used to improve storage times and reduce maintenance
requirements. Gel cells and absorbed glass-mat batteries are common in these roles, collectively

TREADMILL BICYCLE USING SOLAR AND MANUAL POWERED

known as VRLA (valveregulated lead–acid) batteries. The electrical energy produced by a

discharging lead–acid battery can be attributed to the energy released when the strong chemical
bonds of water (H2O) molecules are formed from H+ ions of the acid and O2- ions of PbO2.
Conversely, during charging the battery acts as a water-splitting device, and in the charged state
the chemical energy of the battery is mostly stored in the acid.

3.2 BALL BEARING

Fig no: 3.2

Ball bearing, one of the two members of the class of rolling or so-called antifriction, bearings (the
other member of the class is the roller bearing). The function of a ball bearing is to connect two
machine members that move relative to one another in such a manner that the frictional resistance
to motion is minimal. In many applications one of the members is a rotating shaft and the other a
fixed housing.

There are three main parts in a ball bearing: two grooved, ring like races, or tracks, and a number
of hardened steel balls. The races are of the same width but different diameters; the smaller one,
fitting inside the larger one and having a groove on its outside surface, is attached on its inside
surface to one of the machine members. The larger race has a groove on its inside surface and is
attached on its outside surface to the other machine member. The balls fill the space between the
two races and roll with negligible friction in the grooves. The balls are loosely restrained and
separated by means of a retainer or cage.

The most common ball bearing, with one row of balls, is usually classified as a radial ball bearing
(i.e., one designed to carry loads perpendicular to the axis of rotation), but its capacity for carrying
an axial, or thrust, load (i.e., a load parallel to the axis of rotation) may exceed its radial capacity.
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidyavardhaka Polytechnic pg. 9
TREADMILL BICYCLE USING SOLAR AND MANUAL POWERED

The angularcontact bearing has one side of the outer-race groove cut away to allow the insertion
of more balls, which enables the bearing to carry large axial loads in one direction only. Such
bearings are usually used in pairs so that high axial loads can be carried in both directions. The
clearances in a single-row ball bearing are so small that no appreciable misalignment of a shaft
relative to housing can be accommodated. One type of self-aligning bearing has two rows of balls
and a spherical inner surface on the outer race. For pure thrust loads there are ball thrust bearings
that consist of two grooved plates with balls between. The outstanding advantage of a ball bearing
over a sliding bearing is its low starting

3.3 SPUR GEAR:

Fig no: 3.3

Spur gears are a type of cylindrical gear, with shafts that are parallel and coplanar, and teeth that
are straight and oriented parallel to the shafts. They’re arguably the simplest and most common
type of gear – easy to manufacture and suitable for a wide range of applications. The teeth of a
spur gear have an involute profile and mesh one tooth at a time. The involute form means that spur
gears only produce radial forces (no axial forces), but the method of tooth meshing causes high
stress on the gear teeth and high noise production. Because of this, spur gears are typically used
for lower speed applications, although they can be used at almost any speed. Spur gears can be
made from metals such as steel or brass, or from plastics such as nylon or polycarbonate. Gears
made of plastic produce less noise, but at the expense of strength and loading capability. Unlike
other gear types, spur gears don’t experience high losses due to slippage, so they generally have
high transmission efficiency. Multiple spur gears can be used in series (referred to as a gear train)
to achieve large reduction ratios. Spur gears are generally seen as best for applications that require
speed reduction and torque multiplication, such as ball mills and crushing equipment. Examples of
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidyavardhaka Polytechnic pg. 10

high-speed applications that use spur gears – despite their high noise levels – include consumer
appliances such as washing machines and blenders. And while noise limits the use of spur gears in
passenger automobiles, they are often used in aircraft engines, trains, and even bicycles.

3.4 HUB MOTOR:

Fig no: 3.4

The hub motor is an electric motor that is incorporated into the hub of a wheel and drives it directly.
Hub motor electromagnetic fields are supplied to the stationary windings of the motor. The outer
part of the motor follows, or tries to follow, those fields, turning the attached wheel. In a brushed
motor, energy is transferred by brushes contacting the rotating shaft of the motor. Energy is
transferred in a brushless motor electronically, eliminating physical contact between stationary and
moving parts. Although brushless motor technology is more expensive, most are more efficient and
longer-lasting than brushed motor systems. A hub motor typically is designed in one of three
configurations. Considered least practical is an axialflux motor, where the stator windings are
typically sandwiched between sets of magnets. The other two configurations are both radial designs
with the motor magnets bonded to the rotor; in one, the inner rotation motor, the rotor sits inside the
stator, as in a conventional motor. In the other, the outer-rotation motor, the rotor sits outside the
stator and rotates around it. The application of hub motors in vehicular uses is still evolving, and
neither configuration has become standard. Electric motors have their greatest torque at startup,
making them ideal for vehicles as they need the most torque at startup too. The idea of "revving up"

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidyavardhaka Polytechnic pg. 11

TREADMILL BICYCLE USING SOLAR AND MANUAL POWERED

so common with internal combustion engines is unnecessary with electric motors. Their greatest
torque occurs as the rotor first begins to turn, which is why electric motors do not require a
transmission. A gear-down arrangement may be needed, but unlike in a transmission normally
paired with a combustion engine, no shifting is needed for electric motors. Wheel hub motors are
increasingly common on electric bikes and electric scooters in some parts of the world, especially
Asia.

3.5 FRAME:

This is made of mild steel material. The whole parts are mounted on this frame structure with the
suitable arrangement. Boring of bearing sizes and open bores done in one setting so as to align the
bearings properly while assembling. Provisions are made to cover the bearings with grease.

3.6 SPROCKET

Fig no: 3.6(a)

A sprocket or sprocket-wheel is a profiled wheel with teeth, or cogs, that mesh with a chain, track
or other perforated or indented material. The name 'sprocket' applies generally to any wheel upon
which radial projections engage a chain passing over it. It is distinguished from a gear in that
sprockets are never meshed together directly, and differs from a pulley in that sprockets have teeth
and pulleys are smooth. Sprockets are used in bicycles, motorcycles, cars, tracked vehicles, and
other machinery either to transmit rotary motion between two shafts where gears are unsuitable or
to impart linear motion to a track, tape etc. Perhaps the most common form of sprocket may be
found in the bicycle, in which the pedal shaft carries a large sprocket-wheel, which drives a chain,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidyavardhaka Polytechnic pg. 12

TREADMILL BICYCLE USING SOLAR AND MANUAL POWERED

which, in turn, drives a small sprocket on the axle of the rear wheel. Early automobiles were also
largely driven by sprocket and chain mechanism, a practice largely copied from bicycles. Sprockets
are of various designs, a maximum of efficiency being claimed for each by its originator. Sprockets
typically do not have a flange. Some sprockets used with timing belts have flanges to keep the timing
belt centered. Sprockets and chains are also used for power transmission from one shaft to another
where slippage is not admissible, sprocket chains being used instead of belts or ropes and sprocket-
wheels instead of pulleys. They can be run at high speed and some forms of chain are so constructed
as to be noiseless even at high speed.

3.7 CHAIN

Fig no: 3.7

Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to
convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles. It is also used in a
wide variety of machines besides vehicles. Most often, the power is conveyed by a roller chain,
known as the drive chain or transmission chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the
gear meshing with the holes in the links of the chain. The gear is turned, and this pulls the chain
putting mechanical force into the system. Another type of drive chain is the Morse chain, invented
by the Morse Chain Company of Ithaca, New York, United States. This has inverted teeth.
Sometimes the power is output by simply rotating the chain, which can be used to lift or drag objects.
In other situations, a second gear is placed and the power is recovered by attaching shafts or hubs
to this gear. Though drive chains are often simple oval loops, they can also go around corners by
placing more than two gears along the chain; gears that do not put power into the system or transmit

it out are generally known as idler-wheels. By varying the diameter of the input and output gears
with respect to each other, the gear ratio can be altered. For example, when the bicycle pedals gear
rotate once, it causes the gear that drives the wheels to rotate more than one revolution.

3.8 SOLAR PANEL

FIG NO 3.8

Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. They are called "solar" panels because
most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the Sun, called Sol by astronomers.
Some scientists call them photovoltaic which means, basically, "light-electricity"

A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area can
work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light that hits a cell, the more
electricity it produces.

3.9 TREADMILL SETUP

FIG NO 3.8

A conveyor belt is the carrying medium of a belt conveyor system (often shortened to belt
conveyor). A belt conveyor system is one of many types of conveyor systems. A belt conveyor
system consists of two or more pulleys (sometimes referred to as drums), with an endless loop of
carrying medium—the conveyor belt—that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are
powered, moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. The powered pulley is called the
drive pulley while the unpowered pulley is called the idler pulley. There are two main industrial
classes of belt conveyors; Those in general material handling such as those moving boxes along
inside a factory and bulk material handling such as those used to transport large volumes of

resources and agricultural materials, such as grain, salt, coal, ore, sand, overburden and more.
Today there are different types of conveyor belts that have been created for conveying different
kinds of material available in PVC and rubber materials. The belt consists of one or more layers of
material. Many belts in general material handling have two layers. An under layer of material to
provide linear strength and shape called a carcass and an over layer called the cover. The carcass
is often a woven fabric having a warp & weft. The most common carcass materials are polyester,
nylon and cotton. The cover is often various rubber or plastic compounds specified by use of the
belt. Covers can be made from more exotic materials for unusual applications such as silicone for
heat or gum rubber when traction is essential. Material flowing over the belt may be weighed in
transit using a belt weigher. Belts with regularly spaced partitions, known as elevator belts, are
used for transporting loose materials up steep inclines. Belt Conveyors are used in self-unloading
bulk freighters and in live bottom trucks. Belt conveyor technology is also used in conveyor
transport such as moving sidewalks or escalators, as well as on many manufacturing assembly
lines. Stores often have conveyor belts at the check-out counter to move shopping items. Ski areas
also use conveyor belts to transport skiers up the hill.

3.10 ROLLERS

Fig no: 3.10

The rollers are used for the rolling action of the conveyor belt. The roller is placed at the both ends
of the machine and the conveyor belt passes over the rollers. The conveyor belt is held under
tension so that the belt doesn’t slip off the rollers. These rollers are coupled to the wheels of the
machine by the suitable arrangement for transmitting the motion of the belt to the wheels which in
turn makes the wheels top move.

SOLAR POWERED:

Fig no: 4.1(a)

The experimental setup consists of a treadmill setup which has a belt moving between two
rollers. The motion to the conveyor setup is given by a hub motor. The hub motor is operated by
a battery. The battery in turn is powered up by the solar panel. The sunrays falling on the solar
panel is directly converted into the electrical energy and is stored up in the battery which later

delivers power to the hub motor. The hub motor delivers motion to the treadmill setup through
the pulley and the belt drive mechanism.
As the throttle is given, the power from the motor is delivered to the rollers such that the entire setup
moves acting as an electric bike. As the bike moves, the traveller can able to walk on the belt so that
separate time for walking may not be allotted. The shaft of the tread mill roller and the wheels of
the electric bike are connected by means of sprocket and chain drive so that when the person walks,
the wheels attains motion and the entire vehicle moves. The power is transmitted with the help of
the spur gears. The spur gears are used for increasing the rotational motion.

MANUAL POWERED:

Fig no: 4.1(b)

When the driver walks forward, the machine moves forward. A treadmill setup is made so that the
operator can walk on the belt. A handle is placed in the front for the steering control of the bicycle.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidyavardhaka Polytechnic pg. 19

TREADMILL BICYCLE USING SOLAR AND MANUAL POWERED

The rollers above which the conveyor belt (treadmill belt), held in tension are coupled to the wheels
of the machine, usually rear wheels.

The rollers are connected by a suitable arrangement for efficient transmission of motion thus having
minimal losses during the transmission of motion. The frame of the machine is designed in such a
way that it is balanced and the operator doesn’t put any effort in balancing the machine. Now when
the operator walks forward, the conveyor belt moves in one direction which makes the wheels of
the machine to rotate so that the machine moves front. The motion transmission is done with the
help of the sprocket and the chain drive and the spur gears. The spur gears are used to attain suitable
speed reduction.
