ASSIGNMENT 2

1.
a. List down the effects if the UNUSED heat is not removed from engine.
To allow engine operate at it peak efficiency and maximum power
b. List down 2 method for cooling aircraft engine.
 Air cooling
 Liquid cooling
2.
a. Explain the characteristic of cooling fins.
 It either cast/machined into exterior of cylinder barrel and head
 Also sometimes can be cast underside piston for additional surface area
b. Explain in detail about Townend Ring and NACA cowling.
 Also called as speed ring
 Have airfoil shape ring
 Produce aerodynamic force that smooth the airflow
 Improve uniformity of air flowing around the cylinder
 Can reduce drag as much as 11%
3.
a. Explain the characteristic of Liquid Cooling.
 Constructed with metal water jacket that surround the cylinders
 Heat passes from cylinder walls into the coolant
 Coolant pump circulate the coolant in a pressure loop from water jacket to
radiator, where heat transfer from coolant to the air
b. List down the disadvantages of Liquid Cooling.
 Additional component may resulted in additional weight
 The air cooled not hampered by cold weather operation
c. List down the Inspection and Maintenance guidelines for ‘cylinder cooling fins’.
 Must check during each regular interval (annual/100 hour inspection)
 Check the cooling fin for cracks, broken and bend.
 Refer to manufacturer recommendation when do a repairing
 Cracks at edges may be filed or stop drill to prevent the crack from
lengthening
 If the fin is inadvertently bent on cylinder head and no crack forms, the fin
should be left alone because it may break it if any attempt to straighten
 The typical repair required to move the damage fin by using a die grinder and
rotary file. After removing the damage fin, finish file the sharp edges to a
smooth contour and must not exceed the limits established by manufacturer
