inside+the+mind+of+an+observer,+so+the+subject+becomes+a+form+of+introspection+an

reaching+implications+on+issues+such+as+the+mind-
body+problem,+personal+identity,+ethics,+and+law.%0AThe+ancient+Greeks+took+extrem
e+positions+on+the+nature+of+change.+Parmenides+denied+change+altogether,+while+H
eraclitus+argued+that+change+was+ubiquitous:+%22ou+cannot+step+into+the+same+river
+twice.%22%0AIdentity,+sometimes+called+Numerical+Identity,+is+the+relation+that+a+%
22thing%22+bears+to+itself,+and+which+no+%22thing%22+bears+to+anything+other+than

rizing.+Alexandre+Koyr%C3%A9+led+this+movement,+declaring+in+his+book+Metaphysics
+and+Measurement,+%22It+is+not+by+following+experiment,+but+by+outstripping+experi
ment,+that+the+scientific+mind+makes+progress.%22+That+metaphysical+propositions+ca
n+influence+scientific+theorizing+is+John+Watkins%27+most+lasting+contribution+to+phil
osophy.+Since+1957+%22he+showed+the+ways+in+which+some+un-
testable+and+hence,+according+to+Popperian+ideas,+non-
empirical+propositions+can+nevertheless+be+influential+in+the+development+of+properly
