Students’ Perceptions of Mobile apps: A Needs Analysis of EAP in Vietnam

In the current digital age, mobile apps are increasingly being employed to expedite the learning process.
However, in order to incorporate mobile apps effectively into classrooms, EFL teachers must first be
aware of the logistics of applying mobile apps. The purpose of this research was to investigate the
current use of mobile technology in studying English and make suggestions for choosing apps for a
foundation level English program in Vietnam. To prepare, the researchers used a questionnaire and
semi-structured interviews with students to find out their perceptions and current use of mobile
technology. The researchers also launched a pilot study with two classes for English for Academic
Purposes in the Vietnam-UK Institute for Research and Executive Education and Stairway Education
Company. In the pilot study, students were asked to use a certain app of their choice in 10 minutes a day
and report their progress to the teacher every day. The current situation of using mobile apps in
learning among first year students revealed that students are aware of effectiveness of using apps in
learning but they need teacher guidance regarding app selection criteria in order to maximize their
learning experience and efficiency. Based on the pilot study and the findings, specific and practical
recommendations are suggested to make mobile technology applicable for the foundation program in
Vietnam.
