INTRODUCTION

Sex is a short word, but an immense concept, and many of us spend a lot of time thinking
about it. Sex is the engine that drives creation, ensuring propagation of the race and ultimate
survival of the species. The imperfection of biological machines means that after a certain period
of time they become dysfunctional and obsolescent, and it becomes more economic and energy-
efficient to replace them completely than to continue to renew the old ones.

And one of the consequences of the desire for sex is that sublimation of that desire has led
to that finest of human emotions: romantic love, the passionate unconditional constant devotion
to another person, the inspiration for great art, great literature, great poetry, great food, and great,
great pop songs. Some authors, however, have argued that it is implausible to suggest that this
remarkable harmony between the interests of the species and the ecstasy of the individual came
about solely though evolutionary pressure; that the sheer joy of sexual love is far greater than can
be explained by reference to biological utility or Freudian psychology — as Tina Turner rasped,
‘What's love got to do with it?’

In the days when public behavior had to be discreet, various rumors circulated about
visual signals indicating sexual status and intentions. Few folklorists have yet done research on
the topic; Sutton, 1992, is the only book based on English current material, from women
informants. The present authors sent out a questionnaire in 1998, on which much of the present
entry is based.

Sexual is relating to, involving, or characteristic of sex, sexuality, the sexes, or the sex
organs and their functions. Implying or symbolizing erotic desires or activity. Relating to,

by an examination of external genitalia; preparation and examination of a karyotype is the
preferred laboratory method. Sex dimorphism is differences in structure or physical
characteristics between males and females of the same species, e.g. horns in some breeds of
sheep, feather coat color in many species of birds. Sex intercourse is To join or be joined in
marriage, To engage in sexual relations with: (bed, copulate, couple, have, sleep with, take) .Sex
maturity is capable of mating. Occurs at different ages in different species and in different races
and even breeds. Sex receptivity is behavioral changes in female animals at the time of estrus;
involves acceptance of male efforts at copulation and, in some species, actively seeking the male.
Sex rest is circumstances in which no sexual intercourse takes place.

Sexually transmitted diseases (also called STDs, or STIs for sexually transmitted

infections) are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual
contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 15 million
cases of sexually transmitted disease cases reported annually in the United States. There are more
than 25 diseases that are transmitted through sexual activity. Other than HIV, the most common
STDs in the United States are chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human
papillomavirus, hepatitis B, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis. Adolescents and young
adults are the age groups at the greatest risk for acquiring an STD. Approximately 19 million new
infections occur each year, almost half of them among people ages 15 to 24.

According to Anwar et.al (2010), sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) rank among the
most important health issues for the people especially the young adults worldwide. Young people
tend to engage in sexual activity at younger ages in the past decade than in the 1970s, and 1980s.
Knowledge is an essential precursor of sexual risk reduction. A cross-sectional study was
conducted in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, to produce the baseline information about school students’
awareness and perception about sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) and their sexual activity to
help establish control and education programmers.

Other sexual attitudes correlated significantly with gender as more female participants
indicated they would never have sex with a casual partner. This conservative pattern also was
apparent in the other attitude questions. Males seemed more careless and less worried about
STDs, though they were more informed than females, a finding confirmed by Shapiro et al
(sexual behavior and aids-related knowledge among community college students in Orange
Country, California. J Community Health,1999). Indicating that greater knowledge may be
associated with high behavior.
