HE NATIONAL COUNCIL of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES)
held its annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, August 12–15, and at that
gathering the council’s members passed several motions that support ASCE’s
continuing effort to “raise the bar” with respect to engineering education and licensure.

The model rules developed by the NCEES include three paths for those seeking profes-

ASCE Unveils New Corporate Identity, Logo

I
N AN EFFORT TO DETERMINE HOW BEST to protect the intrinsic value the Society projects
to its members and the public, ASCE has spent nearly two years examining how the Society
is perceived by its members and others. It has asked such questions as the following: What
does ASCE mean to you? When you think about your connection to the Society, what comes to
mind? What are your highest aspirations for our profession and the organization that serves
it? As a result of this study, ASCE’s Board of Direction has adopted a new strategy, along
with a new logo, for establishing the Society’s corporate identity. (Continued on Page 14)

Standards
Provide technical guidelines, or “how to” instructions, for promoting
safety, reliability, productivity, and efficiency across all areas of civil
engineering. These voluntary standards are written by experts with
knowledge and expertise in a particular field. See pages 27–28.

Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice

Present in-depth technical information on a specific topic and provide
detailed analysis of the limitations and applications of the described
methods and technologies. The practical information contained in the
volumes is useful to the average engineer in his or her everyday work,
rather than theoretical findings that may only be occasionally or rarely
useful. See pages 28–29.

Committee Reports
Prepared by the technical and professional committees of ASCE. These
reports present the state-of-the-art and -practice for a wide spectrum of
civil engineering topics. See pages 30–31.

ASCE Press
Publishes a carefully chosen selection of professionally significant
books addressing the interests of various disciplines of civil
engineering, as well as books on management, professional
development, and engineering history. See pages 37–38.
