Summary

Eclecticism is a conceptual approach that does not hold rigidly to a single paradigm or

set of assumptions, but instead it draws upon multiple theories, styles, or ideas to gain

complimentary insights into a subject.

It was first used in the first century that refers to a group of ancient philosophers who

attached themselves to a no real system, but selected from existing philosophical beliefs those

doctrines that seemed most reasonable to them.

Eclectic comes from the greek word “eklektikos”, means “to select” or “choosing the

best”. A main proponent of the eclectic approach is Rivers (1981). According to him, an eclectic

approach allows language teachers to absorb the best techniques of all the well known

language teaching methods into their classroom procedures, using them for the purposes for

which they are the most appropriate. Only well-trained teachers can become eclectic and
teachers with no theoretical thinking about the advantages and drawbacks of any approach

cannot use it.

Eclectic Approach is a method of language that combines various approaches and

methodologies to teach language depending on the aims of the lesson and the abilities of the

learners. Different teaching methods are borrowed and adapted to suit the requirement of the

learners.

The advantages of using the Eclectic Approach are:

*Of all educational styles, this approach is the most flexible, more of high

interaction among the learners, lively learning and fast results.

*Teachers have the chance to choose different kinds of teaching techniques in

the class.

*Flexibility in choosing any aspect of method that teachers think suitable for

teaching.

*Gives chance to students to see different kinds of teaching techniques that

break the monotony.

*It helps connect life experiences to the ideas presented.

Effective teaching has been broadly understood as teaching that is oriented to and focused on

students and their learning so, in order to achieve teaching effectiveness, here are the following

criteria for effective teaching methods:

1. It must be simple for both teacher and learner, and must be within the capabilities

of all teachers.

2. It must reflect the linguistic habits the child has already acquired by learning his/her

mother tongue and their ability to assimilate a new language.

3. It must enable work done with modern teaching aids (e.g. audio-visual aids,

computer) to be an extension of the method used in class.

4. It must be sufficiently flexible to cope with various class conditions (as far as pupil’s

specific/general interests are concerned.

5. It must ensure that pupils are given the opportunity of having the greatest number

of meaningful contacts possible both with and in the foreign language.
