We are often appalled by how sly and dishonest many politicians are but we shouldn't

be. In such situations it's very important to understand what Machiavelli has too say
about this.
Niccolo Machiavelli is late 15th century political advisor and political theorist, who
argued that we shouldn't think politicians are immoral for lying and maneuvering. A
good politician in his view is not the one who is friendly honest and kind but someone
who is occasionally dark, who knows how to defend, enrich and bring honour to the
state.
Being nice may be a virtue in general but what citizens most need from rulers is
effectiveness.
He was born in Florence in 1469 , his father was a lawyer. He received extensive formal
education.
In 1498 the regime controlled by Savonarola fell from power, the ruling council
began dismissing his supporters from positions of government ,the head of the second
Chancery was then unoccupied.
The almost unknown name of Machiavelli was put forward as a possible replacement. He
was barely 29 years old, and appears to have had no previous administrative experience.
This was his first job.

By the time Machiavelli took hold of the chancellor’s office the city of Florence politically
exploded and expelled the the Medici family who ruled it for 60 years and suffered
decades of political instability and turmoil.
Due to this he faced many career reversals he went of from being an important diplomat
to a semi successful general to an enemy of the state, tortured and then exiled when
Medici returned to power.
Although Machiavelli was a failed Politician, he can be remembered as a great theorist
because of his two books that he wrote; The Prince and the Discourses.
