STOP Teen Suicide

You are not alone. Let’s stop this

Mission statement:
How can we help
prevent teen suicide?
Potential Opportunities

- Raise awareness about suicide by bringing

people together at an event and talk about
the issue with:
- Social Media Challenge (i.e. Ice Bucket
Challenge)
1 in 8 Texas High School
- Tournament, with food truck Teens Attempt Suicide
- Food Cook-off
- Ice cream social
Collaborative Opportunities
- We have been contacting individuals who
are involved with various organizations, in
hopes of collaborating on an event for
suicide awareness
- Integral Care Austin
- NAMI Austin
- ASFP Central Texas
- Austin Child Guidance Center
- These organizations hold prominent roles
involving suicide prevention in central
Texas
- Allows us to bring together
large group of supporting
individuals to a single venue
How These - Develops a community that
helps impact our cause
Opportunities - A large group allows those
Address our at risk to feel more
supported and help those in
Issue need.
Communication/Marketing Strategies
- To make the largest impact on people, we decided to create an event that would bring
together as many people as possible to create a larger network of support
- Through social media, we will be persistent with providing information to vast groups of
individuals, in order to show them the details involving adolescent suicide today, in hopes
that they want to become more involved
- Hopefully, by connecting with another local organization whose mission is prevent
suicides, we can spread out to a larger branch of people than we would be able to if we
only did outreach by ourselves
- We can also create merchandise for the event that we will host, so that they might wear
the apparel outside of the event, allowing people to see the label and want to learn more
about adolescent suicide
Potential for Impact
- Building strong relationships with a large
group of people dramatically reduces the risk
of suicide.
- Expressing empathy toward those suffering
from suicidal thoughts can help them feel
more comfortable talking to others, allowing
them to help them when they are struggling.
- Showing that a group cares about the person
can help them see how important they are to
other people, and how strongly their lives
have been affected by those individuals.
- In general, the improper care of mental health can consist of serious
consequences. When measures are taken in order to help someone in
need you must be extremely cautious of what they are going through.
According to Medical Xpress, studies have shown that our greatest
flaw in previous approaches is that we focus too much on people who
are specifically at “High Risk”. Instead we can find that focusing on

Consequences mental health before someone is suffering is much more helpful

towards how they perceive suicide. When formulating our plan this will
help provide us with a better idea of how to proceed in what we will be

of Previous -
doing by implementing this idea that suicide can be deteriorated far
before it is considered.
A specific example of a failed attempt at suicide awareness is the

Approaches show “13 Reasons Why” where a high school is mistreated by her
peers and eventually commits suicide. The initial purpose of the show
was to bring light to the issues of bullying and cyber-bullying in high
schools and ultimately the danger of suicide. The show then became a
huge issue where many people argued the it’s sensationalism was
harmful to young teens rather than educational.
- We can learn from that show and many other examples that suicide is
a sensitive topic and must be dealt with more carefully.
What Else Can We Do?

- Go and support organizations that are - Look for more awareness opportunities in
looking to prevent suicide. the local area.
- National Alliance on Mental Illness - There are usually multiple events going on
- The Counseling and Mental Health Center throughout each year in Austin, which are
- Texas Suicide Prevention often hosted by the organizations listed
- Integral Care prior.
- With monetary and voluntary support, it - Provide personal support to anyone that
will allow these organizations to provide might be considering suicide, and creating
more help to those who are suffering from a beneficial relationship with them so that
