CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Being always present in class and getting to school on

time are two of the crucial determining factors of a

student’s success, this is not only applicable to a student

but as a person who will be managing his/her own life in the

future. The attendance and punctuality in school are

important because students are much likely to excel in

academics when they attend school consistently. This is

exacly true in the tertiary level. With increasingly busy

lifestyles, college students are less likely to attend each

and every class. College students need to learn more because

in the next few years ahead, they are going to work and

follow their dreams until they become successful. But they

cannot achieve these things if they skip school or attend

their classes late.

It has been observed that most schools face the problem

of discipline, absenteeism, and tardiness among students.

Nowadays, attitudes of students are constantly changing.

Educators agree that prompt and regular school attendance are an

important key to a student’s success. Students should be taught to

demonstrate respect for staff and for peers. One way to do this is to

practice prompt were and regular school attendance.

Student absenteeism has become one of the greatest

burdens of college success. It is a matter of concern

because it can lead to insufficient learning on the part of

those absent. Absenteeism has become a general problem to

universities and colleges. It refers to the conduct of

students not attending scheduled meetings in terms of

classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars without

prior permission from the faculty or against default college

policy on absenteeism. The idea of dissemination of

knowledge and information from the teacher in a formal

meeting is that students we able to present and acquire them

in a lively environment. It would be very difficult to gain

knowledge only through copying notes taken by a classmate

because the extent of knowledge and know how will

undesirably be limited to what one can make out of the

copied notes.

Student nonattendance is a problem that extends much

further even in the university. It affects the student, the

family, and the community. In an environment of stiff

competition for jobs, graduates should possess high

integrity, academic excellence, and capabilities to win

themselves a secured career. Unfortunately, negative

attitude associated with truancy has become the more

powerful predictor of delinquency and negligence among those

students.

The purpose of this study is to provide information

about the factors affecting the tardiness and absenteeism of

the students, what causes it, the probable consequences of

being tardy and possible solutions to resolve it. Tardiness

and absenteeism have already become a habit of the students

nowadays but it is not much of an issue to them that it

seems to be a normal thing. Nonetheless, some reasons that

cause tardiness among students can tell whether it is

personally decided or not or due to peer pressure.

Conceptual Framework

The study used the IPO model as shown in Fig.1 in the

next page.

The Input (I) block contained the books, magazines,

journals, and internet; factors affecting the tardiness and

absenteeism of the selected BSHM students in terms of

behavioral factors, financial factors, social environment

and school management and policies.

The Process (P) block includes the data gathering

procedure obtained from survey questionnaires, the

statistical treatment of data, and the tabulation, analysis

and interpretation of the data to be gathered.

The Output (O) block consist the identified factors

affecting the Tardiness and Absenteeism of Selected Bachelor

of Science in Hospitality Management Students A.Y 2014-2015.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to determine the factors

affecting the tardiness and absenteeism of selected Bachelor

of Science in Hospitality Management Students. Specifically,

it sought answers to the following sub-problems.

1. How do the respondents assess the factors affecting

tardiness and absenteeism among the BSHM students in terms

of:

1.1 Financial factors,

1.2 Social factors,

1.3 Health factors,

1.4 Personal factors, and;

1.5 Family factors?

2. Is there a significant difference on the assessment of the

respondents using the above mentioned variables?

3. What are the common problems encountered by the

respondents?

Hypothesis

The study hypothesized that there was no significant

difference on the assessment of the respondents regarding the factors

affecting the tardiness and absenteeism of selected BSHM students.

Researchers Through this study, the researchers were

able to determine the factors affecting the tardiness and

absenteeism of selected students in BSHM.

BSHM Faculty This study will surely help them to

determine the factors affecting the tardiness and

absenteeism of their students. This will also serve as their

guide on how to implement plans to help their students to

become more interested in attending their class.

Parents This study will provide them information on how

to motivate and help their children go to school on time.

Students This study will help the students to attend their

class regularly since this will provide them factual information

about the benefits or consequences that they can acquire in

attending and not attending in school.

Future Researcher This study will serve as a guide and

reference for future researchers. They can the data to get

ideas if they are planning to conduct the same study.
