JIGSAW STRATEGY 2

For my strategy teach I chose to use the jigsaw method. The jigsaw method is a way for

students to learn from one another. The general idea of the strategy is to have students become an

expert on a specific portion of a document, concept, text, etc. Once students become an expert on

their designated portion, they teach it to the rest of their small group. This strategy can be used

for any subject or grade, as it is not limited to any specificity. My specific lesson used with the

class is a lesson I do actually use with my students. The standards for this particular lesson are

RI.5.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key

details; summarize the text. RI.5.3 Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more

individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on

specific information in the text. RI.5.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-

specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. With this students

use the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as their text to identify the main idea and

determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Students are in groups of four and each student is

given a number (1-4). It is here where teachers can make accommodations. For this particular

lesson the assigned part for “reader 1” is less challenging that the portion for “reader 4.” With

this strategy, teachers can strategically put their students in groups according to their ability level

and assign students’ parts that will best suit their needs. With this, all students are still fully

capable of completing the activity successfully. This can also be beneficial to those students who

may be struggling with reading or writing.

Pros and Cons

Three pros with using this strategy are:

 Universal with all subjects

 Easy to modify for struggling learners

JIGSAW STRATEGY 3

 Student accountability

Three cons with using this strategy are:

 Time consuming to create strategic groups

 Students may not understand their portion well enough to teach it to group

 Students can easily get off task

Technology

The technology I used in my presentation was an infographic created with easel.ly. I like

to use the free version of this program as a way to quickly create, what I view as, digital anchor

charts. I have only used this program one other time for another class so I do not know the ins

and outs of it. I do know that the program is very easy to use and it is ideal for creating quick,

brief posters.
