This document discusses absorption, where a gas is absorbed into a liquid solvent. It describes an experiment to measure the overall mass transfer coefficient of CO2 absorbed into NaOH in a packed column. The experiment varied the CO2 gas concentration and NaOH flowrate. The results showed that the mass transfer coefficient increased with higher NaOH flowrate and decreased with higher CO2 concentration. The coefficient values ranged from 4.85x10-6 to 1.26x10-4 mol/L.s.atm.

Absorption is a phenomena where the solute from gas phase is being
absorbed in a liquid phase solvent. The gas and liquid phase are being contacted and the component from gas phase diffuse to the liquid phase. The absorption with chemical reaction will give a larger value of mass transfer coefficient than the general absorption. The application of this absorption is especially for separation processes in industries. The objectives of this experiment are to get the value of overall mass transfer coefficient (KG’.a), and also to understand the influences of NaOH flowrate's and CO2 concentration's on the gas phase overall mass transfer coefficient of CO2-NaOH system in the packed column. The principal of this experiment is release CO2 gas in a packed column, counter currently with the solvent (NaOH). The operation variable in the experiment were CO2 gas concentration in the air, and NaOH flowrate. The reaction is: CO2 + 2 NaOH Na2CO3 + H2O From all datas and calculations, we can conclude that the overall gas phase mass transfer coefficient increased with the increase of NaOH flowrate's, and decreased with the increase of CO2 concentration's. The values of gas phase overall mass transfer coefficients from the experiment are about 4,85x10-6 to 1,26x10-4mol/L.s.atm.
