Welcome back parents! This is our second edition of the Room 10 Times and we are very
excited to share what we worked on during the month of September. We hope you enjoy reading all of
our student-written articles as much as we did writing them!

The Word Wall

Our Word Wall is not just a decoration
in our classroom! In our class, we choose the
words from our writing, reading, math, science
and social studies that we want to put on the
wall. You might be wondering, “What kind of
words are they and what do you do with those
words?” The words we chose to put on the
wall are words that we have trouble spelling or
words that come up a lot in our reading. Have
you ever had trouble spelling a word and know
what to do? Our Word Wall helps us every
time we have trouble spelling words. We
started the Word Wall with only a few words
and now we have built it with lots of words.
My favorite words from the wall are our Cha-
Ching! words. Those are words that are like
college words. Some Cha-Ching! words we put
on the wall are curmudgeon, hooligan and
anxious. We love the Word Wall because we
built it and we use it every day! Mrs., Siegel
said, “The word wall is for you guys. I like to let
the students oversee it. When that happens, it
makes it more meaningful and students are
more likely to use it more if it’s something the
students created themselves!” Next time you
visit our classroom you can visit the word wall!

Writers Workshop

Social Studies

Hello, Room 10 parents! This month in
Social Studies we learned about maps and
globes. First, we learned how the earth is
sectioned into hemispheres. We explored
maps and learned how to use a grid to find a
location. Next, we learned more about
continents and did some research. We used
KidRex as search engine to learn more about
the continent and then made a movie trailer
on iMovie about that continent! Finally, we
are ready to learn about the 5 different
regions of the United States. We are going to
“travel” across the country and visit places
that are known for its history, geography, and
economy!

Readers Workshop
We kicked off our new reading unit,
Mystery! We have been stepping into
the shoes of detectives to uncover
the clues and suspects of our book
club mystery books. We have also
been learning how to use our book
club partners as our co-detectives to
help us solve our book mysteries. We
have been loving this unit so much
that we can barely put our books
down!

Amazon Wish list
By: Alex Pettinato , Aiden Zhang and Kaiden Hammond
. Our Amazon Wish list is like a Christmas for Room 10!
Whenever there is something that our classroom needs or
wishes that we could have, Mrs. Siegel will add it to our
Amazon Wish list. Then, generous parents go to the list
and chose to purchase those items for us. For example,
we needed some more small chairs that we could move
easily AND use our iPads at the same time. Luckily, a
kind parent purchased 2 of them for us. We also
received many books for our new Mystery unit. My
favorite is the oil diffuser. We put oils in it like
peppermint or orange and it makes the whole room smell
amazing! “I’m so excited that we got soft balls to throw
at recess for Wall Ball!” said Cole. Thanks to a generous
parent we don’t have to stop playing it because it was
dangerous. Kaiden said, “I like the Amazon Wish list
because we get to have 5-star equipment.” So, thank you
to all the parents for helping to make our classroom
great!

Halloween Party

. Our Halloween Party was so much fun.
Thank you to Blake’s mom for organizing all the
activities and goodies. We were all so happy when
we walked in the room that morning and saw
Frankenstein on our chairs! Blake’s grandma made
the chair covers for all of us! She made our
Halloween very special. Here is my interview I did at
the party:
Valeria: “How did you come up with the
games?”
Blake’s Mom: “I got together with the other
3rd grade moms and said she got to gather with other
third grade moms and searched Pinterest.”
Valeria: “What was your favorite costume
when you were kids??
Blake’s Grandma: “My favorite costume was
a Garbage Can.”
My favorite part about Halloween is the fun costumes
and of course, the CANDY!
Opinion Writing

We have started a new writing unit called Opinion
writing. Opinion is like a narrative, but the writer is
telling you about what they feel or think about
something. Not everyone has the same thoughts.
In Opinion writing you need to have proof. You
should have at least two reasons and evidence to
support your opinion. Here are some examples of
what we’ve been writing:
Drew Gaul believes that we should appreciate Mr.
Robert more. Ella is writing about taking better
care of the books in our library. Finally,
 Publishing Party

The Publishing Party was a big hit! All
the kids wrote Small Moments and
got to share them with their families.
All the parents went off and read
other kids’ Small Moment stories and
gave them excellent feedback. When
interviewed about the publishing
party Maya said, “I think that the
publishing party went well and my
favorite part was that I got to share
my writing with all of the Moms and
Dads and got good feedback from
them!”

The Book Fair

Our Scholastic Book Fair took place at Hamilton
Elementary School. The book fair was a time to look
at all the new books available for sale and a
fundraiser for our school. If you didn’t get a chance
to shop at the book fair you missed out on looking at
the new informational books, horror books, pictures
books and chapter books. There were a variety of
books because everyone likes different genres of
books. We interviewed kids in our class to know
their thoughts on the book fair. Ella said, “I was
excited and one of my friends recommended a book
to me and I liked the book!” Sebastian said, “I’m
excited that the money from the book fair will let us
buy more books for our school library!” A big Thank
You to all the families that purchased a book from
the fair for our classroom library. Alex and his family
purchased the book Mac B Kid Spy by Mac Barnett
which is the book Mrs. Siegel is reading to us now.
Mac B is a kid who was asked by the Queen of
England to help her find the missing Crown Jewels!

Mrs. Siegel’s Dogs
Stars!

Mrs. Siegel has three dogs, their Aanya, Meera, Kaitlyn, Sebastian and Tanish
names are Murray, Oscar and
Archie (aka Trouble). Murray is old
and grumpy, and he loves
treats. Murray barks at everyone
but he loves to cuddle. Oscar is the
sweetest. He is afraid of everything,
especially thunderstorms. And then
there is Archie….he is so much
trouble! He chases squirrels,
turkey’s and birds. When Archie
doesn’t get attention, he destroys
things like Mrs. Siegel’s shoes and
books. One time he ate a book that
Dr. Machesky gave to Mrs. Siegel.
I hope Dr. Machesky likes dogs!
On scale from 1 to 10 on being a
troublemaker, Archie is an 8,
Murray is a 5 and Oscar is a 2. Mrs.
Siegel would never give any of them
away because she loves them so
much. We love to hear all the
stories about the dogs. Especially
the Archie stories.
