Introduction to music theory


How do we write music?
• This is called a Staff
• We write music in each line or space
Where does the notes go?
• Notes go either on a line or space
• What they sound like depends on their position on the staff
What does a note look like?
• Notes have a head and stem
• Some of them even has a flag, dot, or both!
• Smaller notes are tied together with a beam
What is that symbol?
• The symbol at the start is called a Clef
• This one is called Treble clef, or G clef
What is that symbol?
• This is because the line at which we
start drawing is G
So what is the notes names?
• The G clef makes the 2nd line G
• We only have 7 notes, they are:

• We use Ledger lines
• Ledger lines can be above or under the staff
Note Duration
Note Duration
• The length of time that a note is played is
called its Note Duration
• Which is determined by the type of note
Whole Note
• The Whole Note has the longest note duration
Half Note
• The Half Note has half the duration of the
Whole note
Quarter Note
• The Quarter Note is quarter the Whole note
• 4 quarter notes = 1 Whole note, or
• 2 quarter notes = 1 Half note
Eighth Note
• The Eighth Note has one flag
• 2 eighth notes = 1 quarter note
• Notes smaller in duration than a quarter note
have flags.
• Also, 2 eighth notes can be joined with a Beam

The Bar line
• Vertical black bars called Bar lines divide the
staff into measures or bars.
• The staff has been split into 2 measures
Time Signature
• Time Signature define the amount and type of
notes that each measure contains.
• The first measure is in 4/4 time, and the
second measure is in 3/4 time
