Title : REPELLENT POWER TEST OF BASIL LEAF AND STEM
(Ocimum basilicum) EXTRACT USING N-HEXANE SOLVENT
AGAINTS Aedes aegypti

Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector of Dengue Haemorhagic fever disease
transmission. The mosquito-controls one of them by using repellent application as
a personal-protector of mosquitos bites. Synthetic repellent that generally contain
active ingredients such as Diethyltoluamide (DEET) that can cause toxic effects in
humans, so that alternative repellent is sourced from natural ingredients. Basil
leaf and stem (Ocimum basilicum) have bioactive comoponent such as essential
oils which act as repellent to Aedes aegypti mosquito. The purpose of this research
was to determine the repellency and effective concentration 90% (EC90) of basil
leaf and stem extract using n-hexane solvent against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
This research was an experimental study using Completely Randomized Design
(CRD), with three replications in seven time of periods (hours 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and
6). The subjects were 375 Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and divided into five
treatment groups: 0% (negative control), 15%, 25%, 35%, and X repellent contain
DEET 13% (positive control) which contains 25 mosquitoes. The results showed
that basil leaf and stem extract had repellent power against Aedes aegypti
mosquito and the concentration of 35% gave repelent power for 6 hours which
was highest compared to other concentration. The Result of probit test got EC90
value is at concentration 45,13%. It can be concluded that basil leaf and stem
extract (Ocimum basilicum) using n-hexane solvent is effective as repellent
against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
