SCOPE This specification describes the procedure to be used to perform thickness measurement of carbon low alloy or alloy steel tube materials by ultrasonic method. This specification shall be used also for supplying a standard method for the cladding deposit on the production tube minimum thickness measurements. 2. SURFACE PREPARATION The surface shall be clean and free of dirt and loose scale. The roughness of the test surface shall be 250 micro inch or better. 3. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION All personnel performing the ultrasonic examination thickness according to this specification shall be qualified by demonstration that they are competent of the technique and methods used. 4. EQUIPMENT AND COUPLANT ‘The equipment to be used to cary out the thickness measurements shall be one of the following digital equipments or equivalent: ~ DG 51 8 manufactured by GILARDONI (see fig. 2) ~ 35, 35DL (35 series) manufactured by PANAMETRICS (see fig. 3) - DMS 2 manufactured by KRAUTKRAMER (see fig. 4) ‘The equipment shall satisfy the prescriptions of AC Quality System, ‘The measurements shall be performed at room temperature with the transducers and couplants available to fit the several conditions of measurement, The transducers to be used can be of Contact type or Delay line type. The frequency of the transducers, to best fit the thickness range to be revealed, shall be as a minimum as follow - Thickness from 0.1 mm to 10 mm min. Freq. 10 MHz - Thickness from 10 mm to 100 mm min. Freq. 2.25 MHz - Thickness from 100 mm and over min. Freq. 0.5 MHz The couplants shall be glycerine or oil type SAE-30, Krautkramer ZG5 paste or other appropriate couplants. 5. CALIBRATION BLOCK FOR CARBON LOW ALLOY OR ALLOY STEEL TUBE MATERIAL The reference block shall be a tube of a material belonging to the same P No according to ASME Code Sect. IX, or, if possible, of the same material to be inspected. ‘The calibration block roughness shall not be better than production material. ‘The block shall be machined in thickness steps including the thickness range to be measured. Typical calibration block is shown in Fig.1.
