Curriculum for Video 1:

Physical Science Integrated Topic 4: Energy
PSI-PS3-3
Design, build, and refine a device that works within given constraints to convert one form of
energy into another form of energy.
https://www.teachertube.com/video/rube-goldberg-machines-120419

I would show this video to introduce the discussion of different devices that convert one form of
energy into another. I am expecting most of the class will not know what a Rube Goldberg
machine and will think it is fun to watch that it is just a real-life version of the board game
Mouse Trap. This will get the students to recognize that science really is “cool” and is all around
us leading into the topics of generators or wind turbines. Following the discussion, the class will
build one giant Rube Goldberg machine together. This is a hands-on, integrated approach to get
the students to realize that they already think in terms of energy but are just not recognizing it as
such.

Curriculum for Video 2:

Earth Science Topic 2: Earth’s Systems
ES2-ETS1-1
Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints
for solutions that account for societal needs and wants

https://www.teachertube.com/video/amazon-rainforest-deforestation-226836
This video would be good to show because it introduces the topic of deforestation in a more
popular way, or at least something that most people have heard about. I would have to point
out that some of the video’s reasonings were not applicable to us in more industrialized nations
in that most of our trees are being cleared out to make room for our continuously growing
population. Deforestation is the easiest way to see the relationship between humans and land
and in turn the entire Earth which is what has led us to this global warming epidemic. From
there, I would explain the negative impact that humans are having on the planet with the most
compelling being the “hockey stick” graph. This graph shows that prior to human civilization
scientists have found evidence that the Earth’s temperatures were pretty stable until the
Industrial Revolution where they skyrocketed.
