Subject: Math Central Focus:

Composing teen numbers by using towers of 10 and some more (11-19)
I can statement: I can build teen numbers
Essential Standards/Common Core Objective: Date submitted: Date taught:
K.NBT.1 Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to
19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using
objects or drawings, and record each composition or
decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10
+ 8); understand that these numbers are composed of
ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, or nine ones.
Daily Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to compose teen numbers and represent them through counting cubes and recording.

21st Century Skills: Academic Language Demand (if Handbook applicable)

● Critical Thinking
● Language Function: count, take away, add, represent, more, less, fewer,
ten frame, double ten frame

● Content/Academic Vocab: addition, subtraction

● Discourse possibilities: Partner work with games

● Syntax possibilities:

Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed: Students should be able to compose and decompose numbers to 10 before
beginning this activity.

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

1. Engage Warm Up- Math problem of the day (in slides). 5 mins
Numbers in the Teens Song
2. Explore Teacher will model for students how to build towers of 15 mins
10 and some more. For example, Teacher will count out
11 cubes with the help of a student to demonstrate.
The volunteer will then build a tower of 10 and teacher
will ask: How many do we have left over? So we have
one tower of 10 and 1 left over. That makes? 11
Teacher will draw out the model on the recording
sheet. Repeat again with the number 13. Send students
to their seats to complete the rest of the recording
sheet with counting cubes.
3. Explain Teacher will walk around to tables and discuss with 10 mins
students: How did you figure out how many left over
you had? How many groups of 10 do you have? How
can you find the total?
4. Elaborate/Extend Concepts of teen numbers will be elaborated in flex
groups.
5. Evaluate (Assessment methods) Formative Assessment: As students are working, 5 mins
observe students and ask questions about their
mathematical understanding.
Student(s) & Modifications/Accommodations (2):
Student C will sit near teacher on the carpet in order to manage behavior with proximity.
Student A and student I will be called on frequently during the lesson in order to keep them engaged and
participating. Student O will sit near the front of the room in order to help students comprehension and English
language acquisition.
