Fossils are the remains of plants or animals that got preserved over
millions of years. It is an animal or a plant that died millions of years ago and fell
into soft mud or sand making an impression. The mud or sand over years
hardened into rock preserving the impression of the body.
Fossils are found all over the earth. The best places to find fossils are
river valleys, cliffs, hillsides, quarries, and road cuttings. Once a new fossil bed is
discovered, a team of scientists usually comes along to excavate the area. They
systematically section off the site and carefully records geographical coordinates,
elevation, and other important benchmark features.
