Machine Guarding And safety devices

Its purpose is to protect the machine operator and the other employees in the
work area from hazards created by ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying and
sparks.

Methods of Machine Guarding

 Guards
 Devices
 Automated Feeding and Ejection Mechanisms
 Machine Location or Distance
 Miscellaneous Aids

Guards - these are physical barriers that prevent contact to the operator. They
can be fixed, interlocked, adjustable, or self-adjusting.

Devices- these limit or prevent access to the hazardous area. These can be
presence-sensing devices, pullback or restraint straps, safety trip controls, two-
hand controls, or gates.

Automated Feeding and Ejection Mechanisms - These eliminate the

operator’s exposure to the point of operation while handling stock (materials).

Machine Location or Distance – this method removes the hazard from the
operator’s work area. This are also the distance where a non-operator should be.

Miscellaneous Aids– these methods can be used to protect both operators

and people in the immediate vicinity of operating machinery. Examples include
shields to contain chips, sparks, sprays or other forms of flying debris; holding
tools that an operator can use to handle materials going into the point of
operation; and awareness barriers to warn people about hazards in the area.
Safety Devices
It’s a piece of equipment such as a fire extinguisher, safety belt, or burglar
alarm that reduces loss or damage from a fire accident or, break-in.

Common Machine Safety Devices

 INDICATOR LIGHTS
 SAFETY SCANNER
 SAFETY INTERLOCK SWITCHES
 ENABLING DEVICES

INDICATOR LIGHTS - Available in single and multicolor options, LED indicator

lights provide high-visibility real-time indication of equipment and safety status. They
have a compact, low profile design that enables deployment in areas where other
indication solutions would interfere with machine motion.

SAFETY SCANNER -Safety laser scanners protect personnel and equipment within
a user designated area. These flexible safety solutions are ideal for safeguarding
complex and irregularly shaped areas and mobile assets that cannot be easily solved
using other safeguarding solutions.

SAFETY INTERLOCK SWITCHES -Safety interlock switches monitor the

mechanical guards that separate an individual from a hazard. If a guard, like a gate,
door, or panel is opened or removed, the safety interlock switches send a signal to
the machine control system to halt the hazardous situation.

ENABLING DEVICES -Enabling devices initiate a safety function when a user

either squeezes or releases the handle grip switch. When continuously activated and
used in conjunction with a separate actuating control, these devices allow a machine
to function in manual operating mode.
