Overview:
Throughout the prison community there are a lot of people going into the program which is
causing a lot of problems. The biggest problem is prisoners coming out and facing the world
with nothing. Having no place to live, no food, and no money or jobs. Most of the prisoners that
do get out of prison are in the street just trying to survive. This could lead to them going back to
their old roots and going back into the prison system.“In the U.S and in California has a large
population of people going in and out of the system which is affect on society”(Wagner, Peter,
and Wendy Sawyer). Also say they do come off of the system it states,“that first year 60% can
not hold a job and 67% can't find a job in five years which lead them to be homeless” (Wagner,
Peter, and Wendy Sawyer). If we find a way to change this and help prisoner get back on their
feet it will be worth it.

Mission Statement:
Fresh Starts gives the formerly incarcerated the chance to show their full potential in job
interviews with donated clothing and other services that force the interviewer to look beyond
physical appearance. Our company stands for a second chance, that one mistake doesn't limit and
constrain an individual for life. Being an ex criminal is a label that follows that person wherever
they go and we want to give those an opportunity to relive life the right way.
But unfortunately it is not an easy feat to convince others to overlook a past reputation so
at Fresh Starts we show the world that the formerly incarcerated are able to perform equally. The
first obstacle is appearance, “and some research suggests a tenth of a second is all it takes to start
determining traits like trustworthiness.” (Gibbons). By completing this it gives self confidence to
the person and makes them feel equal.
We at Fresh Starts do this because as Christian we believe in taking care of God’s
children. The theme verse we base our philosophy on is “Everyone should look out not only for
his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). And the exact need we
were drawn towards and spoke to our hearts were the formerly incarcerated.

Action Plan:
With our mission set in stone, we plan to utilize a small vicinity to start our plan to action
with an effective vision. This vicinity is only an immediate plan that we plan to stay for at least a
year or two until we get on our feet of running a non-profit. Within that year or two we plan to
continuously be making the community aware of the situation through events and partnerships
until we grow, expand, and develop into a larger, more long-term and permanent vicinity to
reach out to as many people as we possibly can. Fresh Starts does not only need awareness from
the community but also support. The community might not realize that those who are re-entering
need the support from the communities they came from. Fresh Starts does not only help those
who are re-entering their communities, but us helping those re-entering able to give back to their
community and to society as a whole.
In the meantime this vicinity will provide us with the space to accept and store donated
clothes. Not only will we store and collect clothes but on certain days we will be able to turn our
vicinity into a studio where we can give haircuts and makeovers for those in need of them.
Fresh Starts is different from other organizations already out there in the way that we
essentially bring them all together. Other organizations focus on only one aspect of giving such
as only providing clothes, toiletries, haircuts, makeovers, education, housing, and support. We
are able to provide clothes, makeovers, and haircuts to help with that first impression.
Two organizations already taking action and making a difference are Second Chance and
The Lionheart Foundation. They both provide the re-entering with education, support, and
rehabilitation along with emotional support.
