JUDE LAW
Jude Law was born on December 29, 1972- just 18 months after his sister, Natasha. The
family lived in a big Victorian house in Southeast London. Jude’s parents were always
taking their children to the theater, and after years of participating in youth theater groups,
Jude dropped out of school at age 17 to join the cast of a British soap opera and pursue a
career as an actor.
Law first grabbed the attention of Broadway audiences in 1995, with his Tony-nominated
performance in Jean Cocteau’s Indiscretions. But it wasn’t until his Oscar-nominated
performance as Dickie Greenleaf in Minghella’s The Talented Mr Ripley that Jude Law
entered the ring as a major player.
Key roles in Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Sam Mendes’s Road to Perdition
followed. Meanwhile, Law, who can now command $12 million a movie, continued to
accept roles in small-budget productions and to work in the theater.
For his next project –a new adaptation of All the King’s Men, a novel about political
corruption in Louisiana- Law will act alongside Sean Penn, one of Hollywood’s most
politically outspoken actors. “These are very important times,” Law says. “It’s a time when
everyone has to ask, ‘What do I want to happen in the world, and what do I want for my
children?’ Timely for a film like All the King’s Men.”

(Adapted from “Rule of Law” by Krista Smith, Vanity Fair, October 2004)
