Death of Luis Andres Colmenares

Luis Andrés Colmenares Escobar was an economics and indus-

trial engineering major student at Los Andes University in Bogotá
D.C., Colombia, who was found dead under suspicious circum-
stances on October 31, 2010, after going to a Halloween party at
a club in the popular “Zona Rosa”.The authorities originally ruled
Luis Andres’ death as a suicide. However, the Colmenares family
never accepted that theory. According to the autopsy performed
at Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, by
Leslie del Pilar Rodríguez, Luis Colmenares suffered a violent
death. A second autopsy by Máximo Duque, former director of
the same Institute, hired by the Colmenares family and research
done by Prosecutor Antonio González concluded that the body
had eight wounds, none compatible with a fall.

Almost a year later prosecutors found enough evidence to con-

sider that Colmenares did not commit suicide, but rather was
murdered. And, ten months after Luis’ death, the investigation
was reopened and suspects were named in the case. The prose-
cutor in this case was removed in a controversial decision by Co-
lombia’s Attorney General in May 2012 after constant complaints
by counselor for the defense. In June 2012, Carlos Cárdenas was
charged with Luis Colmenares’ murder and detained.

Unit 3 / Dangerous Sports

3. Reading

Extreme Sports

Are extreme sports too extreme? Read the following arguments.

Then decide for yourself.

Yes! Extreme Sports Go Too Far! People can become seriously

injured while playing extreme sports. Risking serious injury to
play a sport is foolish. Take snow bikers, for instance. These ri-
ders fly down snowy hills at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.

Some snow bikers get the same kinds of injuries “that you might
see in high-speed auto accidents,” said one doctor. Some rock
climbers climb without using ropes. Some bungee jumpers leap
out of helicopters. Athletes called base jumpers parachute from
bridges and cliffs. There is no good reason for people to risk
their lives doing those things. Extreme sports set a bad example.
Kids who see those sports on TV might want to try them at home.
But they might not know how to play those sports safely. When
people play extreme sports, they are no longer playing games.
They’re being irresponsible. No! Extreme Sports Don’t Go Too
Far! Extreme sports have picked up a bad name. Some people
just aren’t used to the things extreme sports athletes can do.

Every sport comes with the risk of injury. Sometimes those inju-
ries can be serious. Injuries in regular sports can be far worse
than those that happen in extreme sports. “I’ve seen two people
killed in boxing rings. And I’ve seen two deaths in football,” said
Dr. Clifford Amenduri of Louisiana. “But I’ve never seen those
kinds of injuries in extreme sports.” Extreme sports also have
benefits that other sports don’t have. Extreme sports can help
young athletes build courage, some doctors say. What about the
thrills that come with playing extreme sports? “I like the risk,”
said Alex Dunand of Ottawa, Canada, a 14-year-old downhill
skier. “If you didn’t take risks, life would be boring.”

Letter of Complaint

Dear Mr. Jeffries,

I want to complain about the hotel where I stayed last week, one
of your company’s hotels. I spent nearly $600 000 on the hotel,
which I assumed would guarantee me some level of quality. That
is a mistake I won’t be making again!

This was going to be a second honeymoon for my wife and I,

which I think you can understand the importance of. The first
problem we encountered was finding the place. The address gi-
ven on your website was wrong. I asked someone who told me
there were always tourists who were lost in the area. Please co-
rrect the address immediately to prevent other situations such
as that which we suffered.

On arriving at the hotel, which had taken more than an hour, we

were informed that we didn’t have a reservation. Another twenty
minutes passed before the receptionist, whose name I cannot
recall, found our e-mail and told us “there was an administrative
error” by which I presume she means “the hotel is run like a
circus”. We were finally shown to the room by a porter who was
wearing a very dirty T-shirt. It was cold and there was a wind
coming under the door, which all made my wife feel very upset.

I would like at the very least a refund of the money we spent so

foolishly by staying in your hotel. I would also appreciate an ho-
nest explanation of why we had to tolerate such treatment during
a stay that was supposed to be relaxing.

Regards

Daniel Marston
