Playing The Fool

April Fool’s Day started in the sixteenth century in Europe. Be-

fore that time, New Year’s Day was celebrated on April 1st. Then
a new calendar was introduced called the Gregorian calendar.
January 1st became the first day of the year, but many people
did not know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New
Year’s Day on April 1st were teased. They were called fools.

Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example,

someone might put salt in the sugar container so another per-
son could “accidentally” put it in their coffee. Or someone might
change the time on another person’s alarm clock so that per-
son would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or
maybe a person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked.

In Colombia

The 28th of December is Innocents’ Day, similar in spirit to the

American April Fools’ Day. On this day, people play pranks or
practical jokes on friends and relatives: people make jokes ho-
ping that the victim believes the false thing. When people get
caught, the joker says: “Innocent, innocent!”. The newspapers
and other media are in on the joke as well, reporting false news
for the people to figure out. In some parts of Spain young boys
of a town or village light bonfires and one of them acts as the
mayor who orders townspeople to perform civic chores such as
sweeping the streets. Refusal to comply results in fines which
are used to pay for the celebration.

Yesenia Restrepo

Yesenia Restrepo lost her vision ten years ago, however, her
desire to achieve her goals remained a priority, so much that
her achievements made her role model and example on how to
of overcoming the challenges of life. A severe headache caused
fatal damage to her optic nerves. She remembers that before the
doctors diagnosed her with total visual impairment, she already
felt that she would never see again, that’s why, to the surprise of
many, when received the news, she calmly accepted it and had
peace.

“I already sensed it when when I started losing vision in my se-

cond eye. I was ready,” says Yesenia. She gives credit to her four
year old daughter who she says is the main reason why she ne-
ver gave up.

“My daughter Estefania was very small ,and I had to fight for her.
With the help of God and the support of my family, I got the strength,
courage and motivation to raise my head and move forward, “says
Restrepo, who worked in a clothing company. However, after her
illness she focused not only on rehabilitation but also in studying
Child Guidance and Systems at the Hogar Lola Montoya Founda-
tion, where her life would once again take a 180 degree turn.

6. Reading

Disability
by Chris Wilson

Nowadays in the “west” the able bodied are constantly reminded

that disabled people have rights just like everyone else and they
mustn’t discriminate against them in any way. Public buildings
have to have ramps and toilets big enough for wheelchairs.

Bus drivers are supposed to announce every stop so that blind

people know when to get off. One is not allowed to refuse a per-
son a job on the grounds that he or she has only one leg, or can-
not speak. We use phrases like “physically challenged” instead
of crippled or spastic. We avoid using the word “dumb” to mean
stupid - and this is not just us trying to be “politically correct”.
Things like the Paralympics have done wonders to raise people’s
awareness with so many positive images and perceptions of
disabled people genuinely have changed. Not that Western so-
ciety doesn’t still have a long way to go, but disabled people are
far less marginalised, far more integrated than in the past when
they were confined to institutions, out of sight and out of mind.

Disabled people’s own self esteem has risen enormously in re-

cent years and they have become far more assertive and insistent
on their rights, and their ability to compete with everyone else.
Even the words “disabled” and “handicapped” are challenged. Is
a blind person disabled when he or she can function just as well
as everyone else? New technology of course is making a huge
difference. Instead of clumsy wooden legs, for example, new ma-
terials and designs in prosthetic limbs enable people to walk and
run as fast as everyone else. High tech hearing aids exist for the
deaf, as well as laser surgery for the very short sighted. Cars are
adapted so that people can drive them with only one hand, or
even no hands at all. Very recently a chip was inserted into the
brain of a person paralysed from the neck down enabling him to
move a cursor on a screen simply by looking at it. This means
he can now do all sorts of things - switch the television and the
lights on and off, type, surf the internet, even send e-mails. Who
knows what he’ll be able to do next? Drive a car?

Dear Mr. Restrepo

I’m writing today to complain about the very unprofessional beha-

viour of one of your representatives. On April 15, 2018, i welcome
Samuel Romero to my home to conduct a survey on behalf of your
company. Unfortunately, i had to kick him out five minites later due
to an incident that happened while he was _______________ the
_____________.

I thought it would be best not to ____________________, but to take

this _________________ to raise my concern with you directly. As a
loyal ______________, i felt that my ____________ and participation
in your ______________ would be beneficial yo your company, hence
i had no reservation when i received your email requesting participa-
tion from ordinary consumers like myself.

One od the questions on the survey asked, “Do you feel appreciated
by our company?”, to which i replied, “not really”. Instead of asking
me why i felt that way, he jumped up from his seat, looked me straight
in the eyes and said that it is consumers like ________________ that
cause people like him to be without a job. I asked him to not raise his
______________ while speaking to me, however, he continued by sa-
ying that we need to show more ________________ for the company
and its employees.

I was very surprised by his sudden outburst and did not appreciate his
attitude, hence i asked him to leave my house immediately. I would
like to recommend you send Samuel Romero for anger management
training as he clearly has a lot of issues to work though.

Sincerely,

Laura Hernandez

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling

There’s plenty of adventure to be had in Africa on land, but the

waters surrounding the continent are equally thrilling. Egypt’s
Red Sea, with its historic wrecks lying on its bottom and over
1,100 recorded species of fish, is a famous diving and snorkeling
destination. However, the rest of Africa remains a final frontier
when it comes to scuba diving.

Considered the continent’s most beautiful coastline, the shores

of Mozambique are best explored in a dhow(a lateen-rigged ship
with one or two masts, used chiefly in the Arabian region.) tradi-
tional sailing vessels that will take you to some of the world’s fi-
nest diving sites. You can swim with bottlenose dolphins at Ponta
do Ouro and with bull sharks at Pinnacles, while the elusive and
highly vulnerable dugong can be seen in the Bazaruto Archipe-
lago.

In South Africa, there are plenty of sunken ships to explore and

you can go diving with great white sharks. Don’t worry, I’m talking
about shark cage diving here. Although adrenaline-packed, it is
perfectly safe. The best place to go shark cage diving is Gans-
baai, also known as the “Great White shark capital of the world.”
