How Fast is Your Reaction?

Objective:

 Measure the length of time of response to catch a dropped object

Materials:

 metric ruler
 data chart

Procedure:

1. Construct a table like the one given below, to record your data.

Centimeters where the ruler fell

Trials Eyes open Eyes closed
Left Hand Right Hand Left Hand Right Hand
1st 0.1 0.14 0.02 0.12

2nd 0.11 0.1 0.05 0.06

3rd 0.15 0.16 0.04 0.06

4th 0.12 0.15 0.06 0.07

5th 0.11 0.14 0.04 0.09

Average 0.118 0.138 0.042 0.08

2. Have your partner hold a metric ruler at its end with the highest number

in cm.

3. Place the thumb and forefinger of your left hand close to, but not touching,

the end with the lowest number.

4. When your partner drops the ruler, try to catch it between your thumb

and finger. (try to look at the picture below)

5. Record where the top of your thumb is when you catch the ruler. This

the number gives how many centimeters the ruler fell.

6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 five more times and records the measurements on the

data table that you have constructed earlier.

7. Repeat steps 2 to 5 five more times using your right hand to catch the

ruler.
8. Repeat steps 2 to 5 five more times using your left hand with your eyes

closed. Your partner will signal you by saying “now” when the ruler drops.

9. Repeat steps 2 to 5 five more times using your right hand with your eyes

closed. Record your data and observations.

10. To complete your data chart, change all the centimeters to seconds by

multiplying by 0.01.

11. After recording all the data, compute for the average by adding up the

measurements of all the trials and dividing it by the number of trials.

Guide Questions:

(Answers will depend on whether the person is left-handed or right-handed)

Q1. With which hand did you catch the ruler faster when your eyes were open?

The answer to this question is dependent on the data. It is determined by

which hand is your dominant hand. Your dominant hand is the one you use most
often to write, hold/lift objects, and so on. Because I'm right-handed, my
dominant hand is the same as mine. When your eyes are open, your dominant
hand (right or left) will capture the object faster.

Q2. With which hand did you catch the ruler faster when your eyes were closed?

The same is true for Q1, when your dominant hand is more likely to capture
the ruler.

Q3. Did you catch the ruler faster with your eyes open or closed?

Oh, that depends on which sense organ is the most effective. The senses of
sight and touch are both important. If my partner permitted me to make go signs
like 1,2,3 GO!, I can catch the ruler with my eyes closed. (Because we can hear go
signals, our partner permitted us), catching the ruler is much faster for me.
Because my hearing sense is superior to my vision sense. If my partner does not
permit me to do so, it is preferable to catch the ruler with my eyes open.

Q4. Explain why a message moving along nerve pathways takes time.

Because nerve cells transmit information on to the next cell, which then
passes it on to another.

Q5. Describe the nerve pathway that the message followed when you saw the

ruler fall.

When the receptor/your eye sees the ruler fall, the sensory neurons of the
receptor get the information, which is then conveyed to the brain, which
responds by commanding your fingers to catch the ruler.
