LEARNING TASK 5
Directions: Read and examine the speech of Nelson Mandela. Then, answer the questions that follow.

Questions:

1. What are the three major problems identified by Mandela?

2. Why do you think Mandela deals with these three problems as personal issues?
3. What pandemic was mentioned by Mandela? Has the world overcome this health crisis?
4. How can the world overcome poverty?
5. What possible steps can be undertaken to overcome poverty?
6. Explain this line: While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.
Your answer:

1. The three major problems identified by Mandela are poverty, injustice, and gross inequality.

2. Mandela deals with these problems as personal issues because he lived in a world of despair, disease and hunger
where weapons took precedence over the AIDS pandemic over treatment and support for the million infected by
HIV.

3. The pandemic that Mandela mentioned was the AIDS pandemic. Based on the text, this health crisis has not yet
been overcome by the world since others have focused on weapons than on securing treatment and support for
millions infected by HIV.

4. From my standpoint, the world can overcome poverty by educating everyone whether young or old about this
contemporary issue. The world can also overcome this issue by providing paid leave and paid sick days and by
organizing good-paying jobs that meet the financial needs of the family.

5. The possible steps stated in the text that can be undertaken to overcome poverty are firstly ensuring trade justice,
secondly, the end to the debt crisis for the poor countries, and thirdly is to deliver much more aid and make sure it is
one of the highest qualities.

6. I agree with Nelson Mandela’s statement that “While poverty persists, there is no true freedom.” It is true that we
do not have freedom if poverty continues. Poverty can affect each other’s futures due to the various circumstances
caused by destitution. We will only have true freedom if we all have food to eat three times a day. As a matter of
fact, poverty is man-made so we can overcome it, presently everyone has to make their own volition with respect to
overcoming poverty.
