SCIENCE 10 QUARTER 3 MODULE 3
II:
1. Failure in homeostasis can be potentially dangerous to a person as it may lead to
various diseases and even death.
2. The nervous and endocrine systems work together to lower the temperature of the
internal organs such as by producing sweat to cool the body down.
3.Because the diabetic person’s pancreas does not produce enough insulin for the body,
insulin injections must be administered to the body to regulate blood sugar levels.
4.The adrenal gland produces adrenaline that enables the body to have the energy in
doing spontaneous work during emergency situations.
5.Birth control pills contain hormones that control the functioning of the ovaries and
the uterus. Most pills have the combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone
to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg during the monthly cycle).
III.
FUNCTIONS GLAND HORMONES
1. Blood glucose regulation Pancreas Glucagon and Insulin
2. Produces antibodies to fight foreign
invaders such as Thymus Thymosin
bacteria and viruses
3. Stimulates growth Pituitary Somatotropin or GH
4. Regulates body metabolism such as
digestion, heart and muscle function Thyroid Thyroxine
3
6. Increases water absorption Vasopressin or
Pituitary
ADH- Anti-diuretic
7. Controls calcium level and normalizes hormone
Parathyroid Parathormone
bone growth
8. Influence female traits and support
reproductive function Ovaries Estrogen and
Progesterone
9. Maintains typically male characteristics
and sperm maturation Testes Testosterone
IV.
1.Goiter-There is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland due to too much or too
little amount of secreted hormone.
2.Gigantism-There is an excessive secretion of growth hormones by the pituitary gland
causing too much growth to the person.
3.Dwarfism- There is too little secretion of growth hormones by the pituitary gland,
thus resulting to stunted growth.
4.Obesity-There is too much release of sugar by the pancreas causing excessive storage
of fat in the body.
5. Osteoporosis-There is an abnormal calcium level in the body by the parathyroid
gland, thus resulting to fragile and decrease in bone mass.
