Solving Problems Involving Wavelength,
Frequency, and Energy of EM waves
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 10 Self-Learning Module 5 on Solving Problems

Involving Wavelength, Frequency, and Energy of EM waves
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

LESSON

You learned in your previous lesson how Electromagnetic wave is transmitted

and propagated as well as its different properties such as wavelength, frequency
and energy. In this lesson you will learn how to solve problems involving
wavelength, frequency, and energy of EM wave.
To calculate those quantities please take note of the important details in the
table presented.

Quantity Symbol Unit of Formula

Measurement
Wavelength λ meter λ=c/f
Frequency f Hertz,1/s f=c/λ
Energy E Joule E=h/f
Table 1: EM waves quantities, symbols, unit, and formula to use
Electromagnetic radiation can be expressed in terms of energy, wavelength,
or frequency. Frequency is measured in cycles per second 1/s, or Hertz.
Wavelength is measured in meters. Energy is measured in Joule. Each of these
three quantities for describing EM radiation are related to each other in a precise
mathematical way. EM waves differ in wavelength, frequency, and energy but they
have the same speed. Wave speed is represented by a symbol c with a unit of meter
per second (m/s) and has a value of 3.0 x 108m/s.

Sample Problems:

1. What is the wavelength of an EM wave with a frequency of 3.0x1015 Hz?

Given:
f=3x1015 Hz
c=3.0x108 m/s
λ=?
Solution:
λ=c/f
λ= 3.0x108 m/s
3.0x1015 Hz
λ= 1.0x10-7 m

2. A certain microwave has a wavelength of 3.2x10-3 meters. Calculate the

frequency of this microwave.
Given:
λ=3.2x10-3 m
c=3.0x108 m/s
f=?
Solution:
f=c/λ
f=3.0x108 m/s
3.2x10-3 m
f= 9.375 x109 /s or 9.375 x109 Hz
There are seven types of Electromagnetic waves - radio wave, microwave,
infrared, visible light, ultraviolet ray, x-ray and gamma ray. These EM waves differ
in wavelength, frequency as well as energy that they have. Photon is a quantum
unit of electromagnetic energy. It is distinct packet of energy associated with
electromagnetic radiation. Each photon carries energy proportional to the
frequency of the radiation.
E=hf
E is the energy of the photon in Joule; h is as Planck’s constant has a value of
6.62607004 ×10-34 Joule second and f is the frequency of an EM wave measured
in Hertz.

Sample Problem:
1. Calculate the energy possessed by an x-ray whose frequency is
3.0x1017 Hertz.
Given:
f=3.0x1017Hertz
h=6.62607004 ×10-34 Joule seconds
E=?
Solution:
E=hf
E= (6.62607004 ×10-34 J.s) (3.0x1017 1/s)
E= 1.987822101 x 10-16 J
